RUBEN AMORIM is closing in on the Manchester United job. The 39-year-old Portuguese manager is now planning his backroom staff - with three trusted coaches set to join him in swapping Sporting Lisbon for Old Trafford. That includes his trusted assistant manager Carlos Fernandes, assistant coach Adelio Candido, and goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital. So important are they that Manchester United are understood to be coughing up £4.1m in compensation so they can join Amorim in England. Amorim has made no secret of his biggest mentor in the game - Jose Mourinho. While wife Maria Joao Diogo is related to former PSG sporting director Antero Henrique, who famously brokered deals for Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. SunSport looks at Amorim's inner circle and closest confidantes. Carlos Fernandes Fernandes has been a constant by Amorim's side, all the way throughout his management career. The 29-year-old didn't play pro, but began coaching when he was just a teenager. He came through Benfica's ranks, and was an assistant at the tender age of 18 when Amorim was playing for their first team. When Amorim took on the Casa Pia job, Fernandes joined him. Then, the pair went to Braga B, Braga, and Sporting Lisbon for the past four years. "My number two is Carlos Fernandes, he’s been my right-hand man right from day one. He’ll be a much better coach than me," Amorim said of Fernandes in the past. "I often say if I become Bobby Robson, then he’ll be my Jose Mourinho! But there’s plenty of time, we’ve signed a 15-year deal!” Adelio Candido Incredibly, Candido is even younger than Fernandes. The 28-year-old assistant coach is tipped to follow Amorim and Fernandes to Manchester. Like Fernandes, he's followed a similar career trajectory as a loyal stooge to Amorim. Candido was already a youth coach with Casa Pia, when they all crossed paths. A role with Braga soon followed, then he jumped to Sporting where he's been for the past four years. Again, he didn't have a playing career at the top level. Jorge Vital Bringing the age up is 63-year-old Vital, a goalkeeping coach who did play pro. In the 1980s and 1990s, the shotstopper starred for clubs including Sporting and Gil Vicente in a career that spanned two decades. https://img.allfootballapp.com/www/M00/59/B8/720x-/-/-/CgAGVmciXEOAZfBqAAICrPXN8QE584.jpg He is now passing on his expertise to a younger generation, with distribution a huge focus of his training. Vital and Amorim met at Braga, and he was soon taken to Sporting. His appointment could spell the end of current goalkeeper coach Jelle ten Rouwelaar, who only joined United in July. Jose Mourinho The Special One is somewhat of a mentor for Amorim. He had an internship at Mourinho's High Performance Football Coaching course. And he has previously cited the Fenerbahce manager as his "reference point" in coaching. He has played down any comparisons between the pair, saying of his idol: "Mourinho is one of a kind. There won't be another Mourinho. Mourinho is unique." Mourinho has already given his backing publicly to United's potential appointment in the past. When Amorim was linked with the West Ham job back in May, Mourinho revealed: "It's also a question I shouldn't answer, but what can I tell you? I like him [Amorim] as a person, I like him as a coach. "I think he has the conditions to be able to coach in any league and he has the conditions to be able to coach in any club. "But he's in a good league and he's in a big club. "The decision is his and it will be up to the clubs that want him or not, to convince him with more or less arguments. "What is clear from my side is that I like the person and I like the coach." Maria Joao Diogo Amorim is married to Maria, and the pair share one son together. Maria has built her own business in interior design with an academic degree in telecommunications engineering. The couple got married in 2013 in front of 160 guests at a beautiful ceremony at the Palácio de S. Marcos church in Coimbra. Players like Nuno Gomes, Miguel Vítor, Hugo Viana, Luís Filipe and Quim were all present. As was Maria's brother, Antero Henrique. Antero was famously the former Sporting Director at PSG - and was a Man Utd target - before the Red Devils switched their attention to Dan Ashworth. He was responsible for the most expensive transfer ever - bringing Neymar to the Ligue 1 giants in a record-breaking £198million from Barcelona. Antero also managed to convince Kylian Mbappe to snub Real Madrid, when he moved from Monaco. While Dani Alves, who was fielding several offers from Premier League clubs, was persuaded that his future belonged in the French capital in 2017.

Amorim 'will NOT be Man United manager until AFTER the next international break'

2025-03-11 18:10:09

Sporting Lisbon are determined not to let 'Ruben Amorim head to Manchester United until after the international break', according to reports in Portugual. The manager has emerged as the frontrunner in the race to succeed Erik ten Hag in the Red Devils hot seat, after the Dutchman was finally dismissed as boss on Monday after months of speculation. Indeed, earlier on Wednesday, Sporting released a statement confirming United's plan to pay the €10million (£8.5m) release clause to buy Amorim out of his contract. One significant sticking point which has emerged over the last 24 hours is the matter of when the Portuguese can make the switch to the Premier League side, with speculation suggesting he could be required to serve a lengthy notice period. According to the terms of his contract, the manager could be forced to stay for up to 30 days and the side look likely to trigger this option, according to A Bola. This comes after Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas gave a short response to journalists after breaking cover amid Manchester United's pursuit of Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils are keen to replace the Erik ten Hag, who was sacked on Monday morning, with the highly-rated 39-year-old head coach. Sporting announced on Tuesday that United plan to pay the €10million (£8.5m) release clause to buy Amorim out of his contract. Amorim refused to confirm if he will be the next Red Devils boss during his press conference following his side's 3-1 League Cup win over Nacional on Tuesday night. The club's president was similarly evasive as he was spotted entering the Sporting academy while on a run on Wednesday. Upon seeing the gaggle of reports that had amassed just outside the main grounds, Varandas greeted the group and simply said 'It’s a beautiful morning.' Amorim arrived at Sporting HQ earlier to take training as negotiations between the two clubs over his notice period continues. Several Sporting players have reportedly expressed their frustrations with Amorim as he prepares to depart the Portuguese champions just nine matches into the new league season. Portuguese newspaper O Jogo have reported that several Sporting players have been angered over Amorim's likely departure. The outlet claims Sporting stars Viktor Gyokeres and Morten Hjulmand are unhappy, with the in-demand pair having been 'enticed' to stay at the club in the summer with the aim of defending the Portuguese title with Amorim. Mail Sport revealed on Tuesday that Amorim has a notice period of ‘a number of weeks rather than days’, leaving the clubs negotiating over the timing of his departure. Amorim admitted he had addressed Man United's interest to the Sporting squad during their pre-match preparations against Nacional. 'There was no talk of anything, it was just before the set pieces to get the elephant out of the room,' Amorim said. 'Before the statement was released, I explained to the players everything that was happening. There is nothing more to say. 'I don't interfere in the players' lives, but I am the coach, I spoke with the board to understand how to manage the squad. Without a doubt my players will be disappointed with me if I leave, but it's part of life. That happened in Braga, when I came. That happened a bit, because they were disappointed.' Amorim has already faced criticism from some fans and former club officials should he move to Man United, amid claims he has 'abandoned' the club. The 39-year-old has led Sporting to two domestic titles since taking charge in 2020. Jaime Marta Soares, the former chairman of Sporting's General Assembly, claimed that Amorim's reputation at the club has been tarnished by his impending exit. Soares claimed Amorim's dedication to Sporting has been exposed as being a 'fantasy' and hit out at his exit during the season. He also took aim at Sporting president Varandas for failing to prevent Amorim's departure, which he labelled as a 'real disaster'. '[Ruben Amorim's] attitude and personality seemed like one thing, but that fell apart from one moment to the next,' Soares told Radio Renascenca. 'His love, passion and dedication to Sporting were just fantasy situations. 'He was the one who created an environment with an entire Sporting fanatic nation around him, who adored and respected him. He shouldn't have spat in the plate that gave him his soup. 'I'm a fan of Ruben Amorim, but there are things that shouldn't be allowed. It was at Sporting that he made his name. 'If he hadn't let himself get caught up in the dream of making millions, and since he was adored by Sporting fans, he should have thought about leaving through the big door and not this way. Sporting fans will certainly react.'

How's the first game of every Man Utd manager since Sir Alex Ferguson went

2025-03-24 11:32:41

Ruud van Nistelrooy is Manchester United's ninth interim or permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013.After Erik ten Hag's bombshell departure on Monday, Van Nistelrooy was appointed as interim boss and will take charge of his first game against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup this evening. Ruud van Nistelrooy is Manchester United's ninth interim or permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013. After Erik ten Hag's bombshell departure on Monday, Van Nistelrooy was appointed as interim boss and will take charge of his first game against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup this evening. United have won just one of their last eight games in all competitions and sit 14th in the Premier League. Van Nistelrooy - who scored 150 goals in 219 games for United between 2001 and 2006 - will face his first taste of pressure at the helm, and he may also be in charge when the Red Devils host Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday. Ahead of the Dutchman's first match, Mail Sport looks back at the first result of every United manager since Ferguson's departure 11 years ago. David Moyes - Community Shield vs Wigan Dubbed 'the Chosen One' after Ferguson's retirement, Moyes won his first game as United manager against Wigan. After winning the 2012-13 Premier League title, United faced the Latics in the Community Shield at Wembley, with a brace from Robin Van Persie securing Moyes' only trophy for the Red Devils via a 2-0 victory. Less than a week later, the Scot also won his opening Premier League game with a 4-1 victory over Swansea City. However, United's early promise under Moyes faltered and in April 2014, United sat seventh in the league and were eliminated from every other competition. Moyes was subsequently relieved of his duties just 10 months into a six-year contract. Result - Man United 2-0 Wigan Ryan Giggs: Premier League vs Norwich City As United's most-capped player of all time, Giggs was appointed as a player-coach after Moyes was sacked. His first game ended in a triumphant 4-0 victory over Norwich in the Premier League. Braces from Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata capped off a dominant performance at Old Trafford. The Welshman made his 963rd and final appearance for the club after substituting himself on for Tom Lawrence in a 3-1 win over Hull City during his time in charge. Giggs managed just four games for United, compiling a record of two wins, a draw and a loss. He was appointed as assistant manager the following season but left the club in 2016. Result - Man United 4-0 Norwich City Louis van Gaal: Premier League vs Swansea City Van Gaal was appointed by United in May 2014, becoming their first ever non-British or Irish manager. The Dutchman lost his first game in charge, a 2-1 defeat in the Premier League by Swansea. This was United's first home loss against the Welsh side since 1931. Van Gaal came armed with 23 years of managerial experience, having previously coached the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich. However, despite winning the FA Cup in his second season, a fifth-place Premier League finish led to his sacking in May 2016. Result - Man United 1-2 Swansea City https://img.allfootballapp.com/www/M00/59/BA/720x-/-/-/CgAGVmciY_-Ae_wyAADS9pQCfyM022.jpg Jose Mourinho: Community Shield vs Leicester City In typical Mourinho fashion, the 'Special One' led United to a trophy in his first game as manager as his side beat reigning Premier League champions Leicester 2-1 in the 2016 Community Shield. Goals from Jesse Lingard and new signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic marked the start of the Mourinho era for the Red Devils. He also enjoyed success in his first Premier League game, winning 3-1 away at Bournemouth, while the Portuguese went on to win the Europa League and League Cup in his first year at United. However, after a miserable run of form left his side 11 points off the top four, Mourinho was sacked a week before Christmas in 2018, midway through his third season in charge. Result - Man United 2-1 Leicester City Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Premier League vs Cardiff City Solskjaer was appointed as an interim manager the day after Mourinho was let go  and had three days to prepare for his first game against former club Cardiff, where he endured a difficult nine-month stint. In emphatic fashion, United beat them 5-1, marking the start of a fairytale run of form for the Norwegian. After winning 14 of his 19 games in interim charge, Solskjaer took over as manager on a permanent basis. He went on to lead United to sixth, third and second in the Premier League over his first two-and-a-half seasons in charge. However, despite Cristiano Ronaldo's blockbuster return to the club in 2021, United had one of their worst starts to a Premier League season ever. Solskjaer was sacked after a disastrous 4-1 defeat by Watford, with his side languishing in seventh in the table. Result - Cardiff City 1-5 Man United Michael Carrick: Champions League vs Villarreal After serving as an assistant under Solskjaer, Carrick was named caretaker manager on November 21, 2021. United travelled to Villarreal in the Champions League just two days later. Late goals from Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho sealed a 2-0 win for the Red Devils and their advancement to the last-16 in the competition. Carrick only took charge of two more games, both in the Premier League. He drew his first league game 1-1 with Chelsea, then led his side to a 3-2 victory over Arsenal at Old Trafford. Stepping down as interim coach, he left United with immediate effect and joined Middlesbrough as permanent manager in October 2022. Result - Villarreal 0-2 Man United Ralf Rangnick: Premier League vs Crystal Palace Rangnick was United's top candidate as interim manager and replaced Carrick in December 2021. His first game ended in a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at home. He went on to lose only one of his next 10 games, before the Devils' form dipped significantly. Rangnick's efforts were only enough to earn a sixth-place league finish at the end of the season. The original agreement for the German to stay at Old Trafford as consultant was abandoned, with Rangnick instead agreeing a deal to take over Austria, where he has been hugely successful. In poetic fashion, his last game at United was a 1-0 defeat by Palace in the Premier League. Result - Man United 1-0 Crystal Palace Erik ten Hag: Premier League vs Brighton In April 2022, Ten Hag was appointed as United's permanent manager, tasked with overseeing a major rebuild after a difficult end to the previous season under Rangnick. On August 7, he lost his first game in charge, a 2-1 league defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford. It ensured the Dutchman endured a nightmare start after Pascal Gross' first half doubled stunned home fans as United were completely outplayed. The following week, United were embarrassed away at Brentford, losing 4-0, with Ten Hag becoming the first United manager since John Chapman in 1921 to lose his first two games in charge. After leading the Red Devils to an eight-place finish in the Premier League finish last season, the board decided to keep him after he won the FA Cup. However, with United 14th in the league after nine games, the hammer fell on Ten Hag on Monday, as the club look to begin a new era under Sir Jim Ratcliffe's ownership. Result - Man United 1-2 Brighton

Arsenal fans rage at duo who can’t start together, both hooked in Newcastle loss

ARSENAL fans have been left raging at Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard following the devastating defeat to Newcastle. The Gunners limped to a 1-0 defeat at St James' Park in a horrific blow to their Premier League title hopes. ARSENAL fans have been left raging at Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard following the devastating defeat to Newcastle. The Gunners limped to a 1-0 defeat at St James' Park in a horrific blow to their Premier League title hopes. Alexander Isak's solitary goal was enough to split the sides and left Mikel Arteta's outfit five points behind Manchester City. The Magpies star headed the hosts in front inside the opening 12 minutes, but Arsenal were unable to get themselves a goal. Supporters have pointed to the lack of contribution from attacking duo Martinelli and Trossard. Martinelli was in his usual position on the left wing but struggled up against Tino Livramento. The defender won every tackle, aerial dual and ground duel against the Brazilian. This massively impacted Martinelli's ability to pose a threat, as he did not provide a single accurate cross or shot on target before he was subbed. Trossard was just as ineffective for Arteta playing in the No10 role. The Belgian only touched the ball in the Newcastle box four times throughout his time on the pitch. The attacker was often forced to collect the ball from his own half before he could try and move forward. Many fans suggested that the duo aren't capable of co-existing on the same pitch. One said: "Trossard and Martinelli in the same team just doesn’t work, we are missing creative passing and it’s very obvious neither has that." A second wrote: "Can't watch Trossard and Martinelli together on the pitch." A third commented: "Trossard and Martinelli are two of our three best wingers at the club. They are absolutely soul-sucking to watch." A fourth said: "Sub Martinelli off and send Trossard on the wing." Another added: "Trossard needs to switch to Martinelli’s wing. Sub off that ram and bring Ben White in." After the game, Arteta insisted that he was "very frustrated" with the defeat. He said: "We deserved to lose today. I thought we started really well and were really dominant. We didn't defend the box well enough. Credit to them. They scored a great goal with a good ball. "Then the game changes and you start to play a different game. You have to adapt and we didn't do that well enough. I am very frustrated. "We got dragged into a game they are looking for constantly and we couldn't play the game that we wanted. "We had two big chances - Mikel had a big one, Declan had a big one. We lacked answers."

'I couldn't ask for more' - Van Nistelrooy salutes Man Utd players after victory

2025-03-06 11:51:51

Ruud van Nistelrooy says he "couldn't ask for more" from Manchester United as they marked his first match in interim charge with a 5-2 victory over Leicester City.Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes both scored twice, while Alejandro Garnacho was also on target as the Red Devils booked their place in the EFL Cup quarter-finals, where they will play Tottenham. Ruud van Nistelrooy says he "couldn't ask for more" from Manchester United as they marked his first match in interim charge with a 5-2 victory over Leicester City. Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes both scored twice, while Alejandro Garnacho was also on target as the Red Devils booked their place in the EFL Cup quarter-finals, where they will play Tottenham. Van Nistelrooy was overseeing United in their first match since Erik ten Hag's dismissal on Monday, with Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim expected to be announced as the latter's replacement. "Credit to the players, they were fantastic today. I couldn't ask for more," he said. "Against West Ham and Fenerbahce, we created so much and couldn't finish. All of a sudden, we had some luck on our side, and that made it a great night. "It is always the target to react and attack. The reaction of the players after the Leicester goals was excellent, and they deserve credit. I am glad the crowd will go home happy." Van Nistelrooy acknowledged he had mixed emotions at taking over the reins from Ten Hag, who brought the former United striker back to Old Trafford as his assistant coach in July. However, he underlined the importance of concentrating on the job in hand, and ensuring his players were ready for Wednesday's tie. "It is clear that this is going to be short term, so for me, today was the most important day after what happened," he added. "Of course, receiving the players and getting together for the first day after Erik had to leave was a sad day to share. "He was the one that asked me to work back here again, and in the first conversation we had, I felt such a passion and care for this football club. That is why I was so sad to see him go. "Having said that, football and life continue, and we knew that 75,000 people would be waiting for us here today, with millions more watching at home behind their screens and radios. You have to switch then as players. "We tried to switch that button for the players, try to get the mindset going, and go out tonight and give everything for the fans." On his own future at United, he continued: "I am here to help, to serve and give my everything for the club. That will never change."

Ruben Amorim: Manchester United target says nothing has been decided yet

2025-03-12 02:10:54

Ruben Amorim insisted "nothing has yet been decided" as Man Utd and Sporting remain in advanced negotiations for the Portuguese manager.Sporting confirmed to the Portuguese stock exchange on Tuesday that United are willing to meet Amorim's release clause after making him the number one choice to replace Erik ten Hag, who was sacked on Monday. Ruben Amorim insisted "nothing has yet been decided" as Man Utd and Sporting remain in advanced negotiations for the Portuguese manager. Sporting confirmed to the Portuguese stock exchange on Tuesday that United are willing to meet Amorim's release clause after making him the number one choice to replace Erik ten Hag, who was sacked on Monday. Key figures from Manchester United are in Portugal as negotiations continue with Lisbon over their pursuit of Erik ten Hag's successor. Sky Sports News understands the focus of the talks remains on the backroom staff Amorim may want to bring with him to Old Trafford. Media flocked to Portugal for what could be the 39-year-old's last game in charge as Sporting beat Nacional 3-1 in the Portuguese League Cup quarter-final to probe Amorim on his potential move to Old Trafford. But Amorim insists he remains focused "on wanting Sporting to become double winners of the league and cup. This doesn't change. I have nothing new to say at this moment". He was quoted as telling broadcast media: "Nothing is decided yet. I don't know if it's the farewell game or not." Speaking later at his press conference in Portuguese, Amorim said: "There was the club's statement and that's the only thing they have at the moment. There is interest from Manchester United, there is the payment of a clause and then, when I have something more concrete, I will tell you, because it is always my choice. "When everything hasn't been decided, one way or the other, there's no point in talking much more, because otherwise we'll create noise. "I'm not going to say anything properly, because I don't have anything useful to say. Just saying that I will take on whatever I want to do, as I have always done throughout my time as a player and even as a coach. Regarding the game, it was a strange game, a strange environment." When asked simply, "do you want to leave" by a journalist, Amorim replied: "We haven't got to that part. The club talks to another club, is talking to another club, and then you take the next step with the coach. "And whether I want to go or not, I'll say later. That's the decision we're talking about here. I won't say." Asked bySky Sports News'Gary Cotterill if the decision now lies with him, Amorim said: "Yes, [the only thing left] is my decision. I will tell everything. We have to wait." Amorim was unable to give a definitive timeline over how long that would take. Sources insist an announcement on United's new permanent manager is not imminent, but if a compensation package can be agreed Amorim could be in the dugout at Old Trafford for Sunday's home game with Chelsea, live onSky Sports. Asked bySky Sports News' Cotterill if he would be in the dugout at Old Trafford for the game, Amorim said: "I will be here..." Asked if that was for sure, Amorim added: "[Laughing] I don't know!" Before leaving, Amorim added: "I will explain everything. It will be very clear." A former Benfica and Portugal midfielder, Amorim retired as a player in 2017 and just two years later he took up his first managerial job at Braga. He then joined Sporting in March 2020 where he has established himself as one of Europe's most sought-after young coaches, twice guiding the club to the league title. He has also won the Taca da Liga - the Portuguese League Cup - on three occasions, twice with Sporting and once with Braga. Amorim did admit that if he was to leave, his players would be disappointed with him leaving halfway through a season. He said: "Without a doubt, without a doubt. But I don't interfere in the players' lives. Now I talk to the players, because I'm Sporting coach. I want to do well for the group. "I talked to the board about how we are going to manage the squad. But without a doubt my players will be, if I leave, they will be disappointed in me and sad with me. But it's part of life. "That happened with me already in Braga. When I came from Braga, from Braga's stability to here, that happened a little. "And they were a little disappointed, because they really believed that we were building something special. But then things happen that change people's lives. And so, it's a difficult situation. "I can't give you more than that. I understand that the players are even disappointed, sad. But I have to live with it. And the important thing is that we reach the end and know how to explain everything. "Whether people understand it or not, the important thing is to come forward and explain it. And that's what I'm going to do." 'Things got heated in press conference' Sky Sports News' Gary Cotterill in Lisbon: "A big part of the being the Manchester United manager is being used to the spotlight in good times and bad times - and he is clearly good at that, speaking perfect English. He took 15 questions in Portuguese, some of it got heated, but he gave those journalists the same answers he gave me which is we'll all have to wait before things become clear. He said it's his decision as the clubs have agreed a deal if he wants to go. "When I asked him whether or not he'd be in the dugout on Sunday at Old Trafford he said 'I'll be here' and I said 'are you sure' and he smiled, replying 'I don't know.' "So he was showing a little bit of humour there, giving quite a lot away. "He's a family man, not a 24/7 football man which could be an issue if he's going to take the United job. He enjoys Portugal and his job here. "Does he want to take on the challenge of Manchester United? Of course he does. He's ambitious and there is big money involved. It would appeal to anyone's ego to work for Manchester United. Things could move quite quickly." Why Sporting coach Amorim could be right for Man Utd Sky Sports' Adam Bate: It has long been inevitable that Ruben Amorim would take one of Europe's biggest jobs. Winning the title with Sporting in 2021 at the age of 36 all but guaranteed that. Repeating the feat last season only underlined his ability as a coach. Sporting recognised that this was a special talent very early, famously paying a huge release clause after his spectacular start at Braga. They bet on his tactical mind, his fierce commitment as a player, but more than anything on the power of his personality. In conversation with a series of Portuguese coaches, some of whom have pitted their wits against Amorim in his native country, we will explore his rise, what it is that makes him so impressive as a coach, and, crucially, whether this can be translated into his next job.

Emery defends rotation as Villa dumped out EFL Cup by Palace

Unai Emery refused to blame his team selection as Aston Villa missed out on the EFL Cup quarter-finals after their 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace. Villa were dumped out of the competition in the fourth round, as Palace stunned the home crowd with Eberechi Eze's headed opener. Both Eze and Adam Wharton were forced off injured in the first half, during which Jhon Duran levelled proceedings, though Daichi Kamada slammed into the bottom-left corner from outside the box to snatch the win. Leon Bailey, John McGinn and Diego Carlos were the only regular starters Emery fielded in a rotated lineup, though the Villa manager defended his decision after the full-time whistle. "We started with 11 players who are in the first team," Emery told Sky Sports. "We started with Tyrone Mings and Diego Carlos, and they can play normally in the starting 11. "We started with [Ian] Maatsen, [Boubacar] Kamara, McGinn, Duran and [Emiliano] Buendia. I don't know if I can have any regrets. "Today, we competed and we lost, but we competed with the idea of players getting performances. Of course, we are frustrated, but if I repeated it again, I would play with the same players." Oliver Glasner's Palace have struggled in the Premier League, leaving this result as somewhat of a surprise against Champions League opposition. Victory came at a cost, however, as Eze limped off with a hamstring issue and Wharton suffered a groin problem. "[We] started the game well," Glasner told Sky Sports. "The problem [with Eze] was his hamstring, and we don't know how serious it is. "We concede and then have Adam's [Wharton] groin issue. [On Tuesday] he said he was fine, but his pain got worse. It's too early, but I am positive as it's nothing new. He has had groin problems for many months. "We thought he needed a break, but yesterday, he gave the thumbs up."

Arsenal fans’ list of conspiracies including red cards, ‘bizarre’ VAR calls

2025-03-15 01:36:44

PLENTY of Arsenal fans are convinced the Premier League and its referees are set out to derail their title ambitions. So much so that they claim there is a whole "laundry list" of conspiracy theories going against them. Of course, while there is an understandable desire for more consistency across the division, the outrageous suggestions have no actual footing or proof. And plenty of controversial VAR decisions over the last year have gone for the Gunners. Many of their fans continue to blast the PGMOL online. Words such as "cheat" and "corrupt" regularly get bandied about whenever their team fail to pick up all three points. And one fan fumed this week: "I don’t give a f*** what anybody tells me, I genuinely believe there is a conspiracy to stop Arsenal from winning the Premier League by Premier League referees. "We just have a laundry list of examples. I can’t be going crazy here. This is ridiculous." Their own manager Mikel Arteta has certainly had his complaints - but even he had to debunk his supporters for their conspiracy theories accusations. But here are some of the most contentious calls which have riled up Arsenal fans the most on social media... NEWCASTLE GOAL STANDS The one that really kick-started the complaints came at St James' Park in November 2023 when Anthony Gordon's winner was allowed to stand. The ball looked as though it might have gone out of play before calls for a foul and an offside. Arteta blasted the calls as "embarrassing" and a "disgrace" - even though Kai Havertz was lucky to escape a red card in the game. Arsenal fan fury escalated a year on when Aston Villa's goal was ruled out when the ball was adjudged to have crossed the byline in the build-up. HAVERTZ HANDBALL Arsenal suffered another 1-0 defeat last December, that time at Aston Villa. The Gunners thought they had scored a last-gasp equaliser but it was chalked off for a Havertz handball. But upon seeing the replays, some Gunners fans were convinced the ball actually hit Matty Cash's hand in a second handball. And their misery was compounded when it was confirmed that if a team-mate put the ball into the net, it may well have stood. RICE RED The big one to trigger the 2024-25 season's complaints came at the end of August when Arsenal hosted Brighton. Already on a yellow card, Declan Rice petulantly flicked a rolling ball away from Joel Veltman, who was lining up a free-kick. Veltman ended up kicking Rice who went down, only to be given his marching orders with a second yellow from Chris Kavanagh for "delaying the restart". Arsenal quite rightly pointed to the lack of consistency as Joao Pedro received no punishment for kicking the ball down the pitch when it had already gone out for a throw. The Gunners were in total control but the red card changed the game and it finished 1-1. TROSSARD SUFFERS SAME FATE And Rice was not the only Arsenal player to be sent off for a second yellow this season after delaying the restart. Just three weeks after the Brighton incident, Leandro Trossard saw red in similar fashion away at Manchester City. Again already on a yellow, the whistle had already gone for a foul when Trossard thumped it clear and Michael Oliver brandished the second yellow. Jeremy Doku escaped a caution because he was knocking the ball back to where a free-kick was given in the same game. Arsenal were quick to point out Oliver refereed some matches in the UAE - and therefore implied he was on the payroll of Manchester City's owners and would then be biased against Arsenal. It finished 2-2 at the Etihad after Arsenal had clung on to their lead until the 98th minute. SALIBA SENT OFF Arsenal picked up their third red card of the season when William Saliba was dismissed at Bournemouth - and they went on to lose 2-0. Rob Jones initially showed Saliba yellow card for pulling back Evanilson just into the Gunners' half - but VAR intervened and decided he had denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. And as a result, it was upgraded to a red card. Just 24 hours later, Arsenal fans kicked off that Chelsea's Tosin Adarabioyo stayed on the field following a similar incident at Anfield. STONES' GOAL STANDS On the day after the defeat at the Vitality, the mood amongst Gunners supporters worsened when Manchester City grabbed an injury-time winner at Wolves. John Stones' header was originally written off for offside - before the VAR decided Bernardo Silva was not interfering with Jose Sa despite being in an offside position. LIVERPOOL PART I Then came the 2-2 draw with Liverpool last weekend. Arsenal were incensed that a late winner was not allowed. Although it was not immediately clear why, Anthony Taylor blew the whistleWAYbefore the ball eventually ended up in the net. Havertz bundled Trent Alexander-Arnold to the ground to get to the loose ball as it came back off the post, anyway, so there was no way the goal would have counted. Still, Arsenal fans reckon the so-called "phantom goal" could come back to haunt them come the end of the season. LIVERPOOL PART II In the same game, the Gunners felt they should have had a penalty for a strong challenge from Ibrahima Konate on Gabriel Martinelli. Replays and the Premier League Match Centre on X both confirmed the Reds defender won the ball. And the Gunners fans seemingly forgot about Martin Odegaard's blatant handball at Anfield last season that went unpunished. LIVERPOOL PART III Lastly, some Arsenal fans even claimed David Raya's yellow card for time wasting was "pre-meditated" by Taylor. One even went back and counted the exact number of seconds Liverpool took over corners to compare to Raya in a desperate attempt to drive home the conspiracy theory agenda.

Fabio Paim claims he was BETTER than Ronaldo, but ended up as a PORNSTAR!

2025-03-20 18:22:58

Over the past two decades, Cristiano Ronaldo has established himself as one of the greatest footballers to ever play the game. But there was a time in his young career when he may not even have been the best player in his academy team. Over the past two decades, Cristiano Ronaldo has established himself as one of the greatest footballers to ever play the game. But there was a time in his young career when he may not even have been the best player in his academy team. Starting out at Sporting Lisbon, Ronaldo came through the ranks with another winger by the name of Fabio Paim. Rumour has it that Paim was the more talented of the pair. Or at least that's what he will tell you. According to Paim, who is now 36, he was destined for stardom and a better career than Ronaldo, but his work ethic let him down. 'He grew up with me, we spent a long time together,' Paim explained in a recent interview with Globo Esporte as he reflected on his relationship with Ronaldo. 'I was Sporting's number one at that time. Cristiano started to be Cristiano when he went to Manchester. Even then, nobody knew he would become what he is today. https://img.allfootballapp.com/www/M00/5A/0A/720x-/-/-/CgAGVmcmWqCAA4aCAACy7eiLN4I575.jpg 'Today Cristiano is the king, Paim is nobody. And people say "oh, he's a liar, he wasn't better". But the truth is that I was better than him and everyone knows that. I had more talent. But talent is nothing, talent is just a little bit. If you don't have the rest, you'll be nobody.' So, is Paim telling the truth? A quote attributed to Ronaldo from when he first joined Manchester United in 2003 indicates that he might be. Having rocked up at Old Trafford as a wiry teenager, Ronaldo is reported to have told the media: 'If you think I'm good, wait until you see Fabio Paim'. They nearly got their chance in 2008 when Paim moved to Chelsea on loan. He joined Luiz Felipe Scolari's side as a 20-year-old just months after Chelsea had narrowly missed out on winning the Champions League and rubbed shoulders with the likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba. However, his time in west London proved disastrous, as despite earning almost £50,000-a-month, he failed to make a single senior appearance. After four months of being restricted to playing for the reserves, he returned to Portugal. From there, Paim's career rather petered out. The exciting talent that was supposed to be the next big thing never won a single international cap for Portugal, and ended up playing his football in obscure leagues in Angola, Qatar, Lithuania and Hungary before hanging his boots up following a spell in Poland in 2021. Was it all just about his lack of work ethic? A deeper look into Paim's life indicates that his off-field behaviour may also have played a part in him failing to live up to his potential. Paim has faced accusations of rape twice, in Portugal in 2012 and then again three years later in Lithuania. On both occasions, the cases did not lead to trials. But in 2019, he did end up in jail after being arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking. Paim spent a year at Caxias Prison in Lisbon, and revealed in an interview with The Sun last year that he was able to watch his former team-mate Ronaldo train from his cell. 'From jail, I could see the Portuguese national team's training ground,' he explained. He may have wanted to be out on the pitch with Ronaldo, but those days were long gone. Still, that hasn't stopped Paim reminiscing about the past. After being released from jail, Paim went on a podcast hosted by PT Clipes, and made a cheeky request to Ronaldo. 'I said when I was happy that I thought Cristiano Ronaldo could offer me a Ballon d'Or,' Paim said. 'But it was with humility. If I had half of Cristiano's head, it wouldn't be him and Messi. 'It would be me, him and Messi and maybe he wouldn't have won the Ballon d'Ors that he has. Maybe one of them was mine.' Ronaldo responded in brutal fashion on Instagram, writing: 'Wtf??? Who is this guy?' but Paim has insisted this was a tongue-in-cheek comment from his ex-team-mate. Those dreams of Ballon d'Ors and sharing the pitch with Ronaldo again are over, though, as Paim has decided to go down a completely new career path. He recently announced that he is now a pornstar, and he shot his first film in September. The feedback was positive, with Diana Melancia, one of two women who performed alongside Paim in a sex tape that went on sale overnight for £65 on Telegram, telling The Sun: 'We thought he was going to be nervous and it wouldn't work out - but Fabio turned out to be a lion. 'He was good at football and he is good at porn. He's going to be a success. I hope this film is the first of many with Paim.' Paim himself is pleased with the reaction to his career switch, having been thrust back into the spotlight in recent months. 'Here in Portugal [the news about the pornographic film] is all the rage, everyone is going crazy,' he told Globo Esporte. 'Do you know why? Because people don't take it the wrong way, that's just how I am. On a podcast, I said that my dream was to be a pornographic actor. I got a lot of offers. I was on the news, I was on the front pages of newspapers... And I hadn't done anything. 'Since everyone was talking about it, [I thought] let's make a film. And I did. I'll tell you one thing. It's good to have sex and still get paid for it.' Paim has been tipped to succeed in his new industry, but he was also expected to thrive as a footballer. After troubles on and off the pitch for the best part of 20 years, Paim is now looking to put that behind him as he begins his next adventure.

Why Real Madrid’s problems go beyond just Ancelotti after El Clasico defeat

2025-03-28 09:59:14

Just as much as what you see and hear in every narrative, the absence of what is not there plays an equally large role in making it seductive, intriguing, or shocking. When Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal vacuumed the sound out of the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday night, punctuated solely by the shouts of a few Barcelona fans meant to be hidden in the corner, that silence and everything you feel with it is one that few other spectacles can replicate. On reflection, Carlo Ancelotti might have taken the moment to close his eyes and appreciate it. Since before the final whistle in El Clasico, he has faced a wall of sound, from keyboard to headline to radio station, all indignation and reproach. If you take one conclusion from this week’s coverage in Madrid, it should be that President Florentino Perez is fed up. The bespectacled Caesar has thumped the big red button, and the machines of pressure, from which Ancelotti had been as free from as any Real Madrid manager, can be heard between the lines. Ancelotti is not blameless, but to think Real Madrid would be rid of all their issues if Xabi Alonso were there instead, is a simplification that will create more problems than it would solve. The first thing to say is that despite being mugged off by Inigo Martinez and Pau Cubarsi for most of the match, Ancelotti had it right. His plan was working in the first half. The unorthodox positioning of Eduardo Camavinga and Jude Bellingham created three clear chances in the first half for Real Madrid, while Barcelona threatened, but only really broke through once. Barcelona couldn’t find rhythm, nor launch their lethal counters effectively, with Raphinha’s runs starved of service. Even if Real Madrid struggled to spring the backdoor open often – they only need to catch them once, said Madridistas hungrily – it did happen thrice. Where Ancelotti was outfoxed, and where Real Madrid were left chasing their tail, was with the entrance of Frenkie de Jong. The Dutchman changed the dynamics, and while Fermin Lopez functioned as second forward, introduced to empower Barcelona’s press, de Jong delivered domination – three against two with Pedri, Marc Casado against Aurelien Tchouameni and Fede Valverde. Failure to react in time cost Real Madrid not just a bloody nose, but pummeling that has left more lasting effects on egos. Criticism for Ancelotti is more than justified, and beyond the Clasico, it’s true that they’ve looked vulnerable, without necessarily bringing big enough weaponry to the fight to scare many teams into a more conservative approach. He himself has admitted that he is yet to work out the formula for magic. What is lacking from that criticism is solutions. Where would Ancelotti have turned to alter Real Madrid’s style, which pieces should he have introduced? Luka Modric and Arda Guler might have delayed and disguised their passes better to beat the offside line, but both would likely have been isolated by Barcelona without the ball, and setting either to the task of keeping Alejandro Balde quiet would have earned Ancelotti just as much derision. Outside of that, Brahim Diaz is just off the back of two months out. Dani Ceballos is equally familiar with the treatment table, and has just nine starts in the last two seasons. The ex-Real Betis midfielder, alongside Modric, is one of two players in the squad that have shown an ability to direct traffic in midfield, before addressing the physical and situational factors. Real Madrid’s strategy of not recruiting profiles but top players has served them well, and better than most other top clubs, but Ancelotti has been one of the reasons that has not hindered Los Blancos too much over the last three seasons. Losing Toni Kroos was the tipping point. What Modric and Kroos have provided so well for Real Madrid, amongst a generation of terrifying athletes, gifted forwards and lethal competitors, is referred to simply in Spain as ‘futbol’. Earlier this season Ancelotti was asked about his repeated statements that he is looking for a faster and more direct side, and his justification was quite simply that ‘we don’t have players for small spaces’, an unusually damning indictment of his own squad. While Brahim, Vinicius and Rodrygo Goes might start a bar fight over that statement, all of those players are in the final third, and the problem all season, and in the Clasico, is getting the ball to them. Tchouameni, Camavinga and Valverde are blessed with special quality, but none would be signed by another top team as their point guard. It’s not just Kroos either. As Real Madrid fans awaited their trademark comeback last week, or against Lille, or tried to hold out against Atletico Madrid, they lacked an unlikely hero. Nacho Fernandez was far from perfect, but he was a leader, and Dani Carvajal is gone through injury now too. Over half of Jude Bellingham’s goals in La Liga last season came with Joselu Mato on the pitch, and his presence to tie up backlines late on is being sorely missed. Given Mbappe’s best form for France has always demanded Olivier Giroud ahead of him, he too is probably frowning at the big 6’3 German-Spanish hole left by the former Alaves man. Even renowned fitness coach Antonio Pintus has caught some heat. His deliberate method of training Real Madrid to have two fitness peaks, one in November-December and one in March-April, has paid clear dividends. In six years across two spells, Los Blancos have collected four Champions Leagues, results clear of all competitors. In La Liga, it’s ‘just’ three, below expectation at Real Madrid, and a strategy that has clashed with domestic consistency. Last year, Real Madrid hit that second peak with a lead in La Liga, sustained by an Ancelotti decision. The move to use Bellingham as a ‘llegador’ or arriver, was a stroke of genius that covered for an unevenness in last season’s squad. It made Real Madrid much better than they were supposed to be, in a season which began with Barcelona as favourites to retain the title. Quietly, and away from prying ears, Ancelotti might be looking at Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique, or Mikel Arteta and wondering why every other top manager gets at least two players for every role. This year he has been left without a number nine, controlling presence in midfield, or much in the way of a natural width. It doesn’t help when Flick is inventing multiple Sergio Busquets successors out of thin La Masia air. If anything, Ancelotti has managed too well for his own good. He lacks the leverage in the club offices. His flaws have been exposed this season, but Real Madrid know Ancelotti just as well he knows them. And they should have known that he would not hold them to account in the same way many other top coaches might, for better or worse. None of this will matter come the end of the season, or to Ancelotti’s job security, but let the record not be defined by what is not in it.

Postecoglou lauds 'ever-evolving' Spurs after eliminating Man City

Ange Postecoglou hailed Tottenham's EFL Cup fourth-round victory over Manchester City as his side continue to evolve under his stewardship. Timo Werner and Pape Sarr were both on target in the first half on Wednesday, with Matheus Nunes reducing the deficit on the stroke of half-time. Spurs held on against a much-rotated City side, who suffered their first defeat of the season after a 2-1 reverse in north London. Tottenham disappointed in a 1-0 loss away to Crystal Palace in the Premier League before this win, though Postecoglou was delighted with his side's response. "It's a cup tie played against a formidable opponent, I thought we did well for the most part," he told Sky Sports. "We didn't allow too many clear-cut chances. We could have put the game away, but City are always going to push you. "It's an ever-evolving process, this team is growing all the time, but when you have growth you are going to stumble. "As disappointed as we were on Sunday I had great belief we could come out today and put up a great show. "Both our goals were quality goals, they have to be as City don't give easy chances." Spurs had been eliminated in their last three EFL Cup ties against fellow Premier League sides, going out to Chelsea in 2021-22, Nottingham Forest in 2022-23 and Fulham in 2023-24. Werner eased any nerves after just five minutes, however, with his close-range finish easing the mounting pressure on the former Chelsea forward. "Great for Timo. He is going through a tough time, but the build-up play was great," Postecoglou added. "It should lift him, we are supporting him, but it is down to him and his approach to things. He was unlucky to not get one or two more, if attacking players don't score they feel anxiety a bit." Postecoglou hammered his side after their collapse at the start of October in a 3-2 defeat to Brighton, and similar criticism followed after their defeat to Palace last time out. The Australian coach is remaining level-headed, though. "I don't believe in big moments or catastrophic moments - we are the same team that we were three days ago. Hopefully, we have more good days ahead of us," he concluded.

How much Ruben Amorim will cost Man United

2025-03-20 05:01:17

Manchester Untied have made it very clear that they believe Ruben Amorim is the man to take their club forward, though the true price of their choice has now been revealed.United have been circling around Amorim over the last few days after Erik ten Hag's departure on Monday following a thoroughly underwhelming start to his third campaign at the helm. Manchester Untied have made it very clear that they believe Ruben Amorim is the man to take their club forward, though the true price of their choice has now been revealed. United have been circling around Amorim over the last few days after Erik ten Hag's departure on Monday following a thoroughly underwhelming start to his third campaign at the helm. United remain in talks with Sporting over their head coach - who has caught the eyes of a number of Premier League clubs in the last 18 months - with the former Portugal international's notice period thought to be an issue. His notice period is believed to be a matter of weeks, rather than days, meaning that even if a deal could be pushed through in the next 24 hours, it is very unlikely he would be in the dugout for United's clash with Chelsea on Sunday. The Premier League side are also thought to be open to Amorim bringing his coaching staff with him, though the cost of such a venture has now been revealed. For United to bring in Amorim, they would have to pay the £8.3million release clause in his contract - however Sporting have already revealed that the Red Devils have informed them they are willing to do just that. But to also welcome his coaching staff to Old Trafford, it is reportedly set to cost the club another £4.3m, meaning the total cost of appointing Amorim would be close to £13m. Splashing what would be an eight-figure fee may raise eyebrows given Ineos' recent cost-cutting measures. The new part-owners of United have sought to reduced overheads at the club since coming in in order to increase efficiency at Old Trafford. One such measure emerged over the weekend after it was revealed the Red Devils had contacted Manchester City chiefs about whether their arch rivals could ferry their Kopa Trophy nominees Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo - a call which unsurprisingly fell on deaf ears. Amorim though would at least be an expenditure that nay-sayers might understand, given the fact that he is one of the most highly-rated emerging coaches on the continent after his stellar work with Sporting. https://img.allfootballapp.com/www/M00/59/BF/720x-/-/-/CgAGVWcijMeAWhf8AACDmYiT4JE132.jpg The 39-year-old ended the club's 19-year wait for a Portuguese top-flight title in 2020-21, before adding a second crown in 2023-24. His side have begun their title defence in the best way possible too, with nine straight wins - which is just as well given rivals Porto have made a blistering start too with eight wins from nine. In the absence of a full-time manager, former striker and assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has stepped up to take interim charge.

MU tipped for DISMAL finish by supercomputer despite Amorim's imminent arrival

Manchester United have been tipped to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League while City will narrowly pip Arsenal to the title in a thrilling three-way race. That is according to the latest predictions from a supercomputer, via JeffBet, which has determined the most probable places for each side at the end of the season. Manchester United have been tipped to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League while City will narrowly pip Arsenal to the title in a thrilling three-way race. That is according to the latest predictions from a supercomputer, via JeffBet, which has determined the most probable places for each side at the end of the season. United yesterday officially announced Ruben Amorim as Erik ten Hag's successor at Old Trafford but must wait until November 11 for the 39-year-old to take charge, with Ruud van Nistelrooy extending his interim spell until the international break. Ten Hag was dismissed the day after the dismal 2-1 defeat by West Ham and judging from the computer's latest forecast, there is plenty of work to be done for Amorim. Indeed, the Red Devils could be set for a lowly 12th-placed finish despite the drastic change in the dugout. They have not dropped below 10th place since placing 13th in 1990 under Sir Alex Ferguson - a campaign in which they also won the FA Cup. This campaign, United may have to settle for a tally of just 50 points, a figure that would push them below Brentford (ninth), Nottingham Forest (10th) and Bournemouth (11th) and keep them level with the Hammers. At the opposite end of the table, the AI has calculated that City will win a fifth straight title, ahead of Mikel Arteta's challengers on goal difference. Both heavyweights have been tipped to finish with 95 points apiece. Liverpool, meanwhile, would therefore have to settle for third place despite Arne Slot's near-perfect start to his debut season in England. Despite them sitting second at present, and just one point behind City, the AI believes the Reds will drop as far as seven points off the pace on 88. Enzo Maresca's Chelsea would take 76 points should the supercomputer prove correct, enough to leave them fourth and back in the Champions League. Aston Villa and Brighton are fifth and sixth respectively in this scenario while Newcastle would edge off competition from Tottenham to finish seventh. In the relegation zone, newcomers Southampton and Ipswich have been tipped to drop back down to the Championship at the first time of asking. According to the computer, they will also be joined by Gary O'Neil's Wolves. As reported by Mail Sport, O'Neil maintains the immediate backing of the hierarchy at Molineux but is focusing mounting pressure to turn the club's season around.

Mourinho encouraged Amorim to take Man Utd job but Sporting boss wants to delay

JOSE MOURINHO encouraged Ruben Amorim to take the jump from Sporting Lisbon to Manchester United. The Fenerbahce and former Red Devils boss has been a long time mentor to Amorim who had an internship at Mourinho's High Performance Football Coaching course back in 2018. The pair have remained close and so he was the person the 39-year-old turned to when he became aware of United’s interest. SunSport also understands that Amorim wants to delay his move to United until after Sporting play Manchester City in the Champions League in Lisbon next Tuesday. His next match is at home on Friday to Estrela. It seems certain that interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy will therefore be in charge for not only the Leicester City Carabao Cup game but also the visit of Chelsea to Old Trafford on Sunday. United have agreed to pay Amorim’s £8.5million release clause. But the club want a further £4.1million for him to take his Sporting backroom staff with him. The sticking point, however, is that Sporting are looking to promote his assistant Carlos Fernandez to Amorim’s post despite him being only 29. While there are reports that Sporting will hold Amorim to a 30-day notice period the coach is convinced he will be at Old Trafford next week. He has agreed to a two-and-a-half year contract with the option on the United’s side to extend that by a further year. Amorim had already been spoken to by United’s hierarchy before firing Erik ten Hag on Monday morning. The man himself immediately turned to Mourinho for advice. Despite his own dismissal by the club in his third season ‘The Special One’ encouraged him to make the move. Mourinho backed him when he was linked to the West Ham job. Mourinho said: “I think he has the conditions to be able to coach in any league and he has the conditions to be able to coach in any club.” Amorim for his part once referred to Mourinho as a ‘reference point’ and said of him: “Mourinho is one of a kind. There won't be another Mourinho. Mourinho is unique.”

Marino backing Napoli to go for Man Utd's Rashford after McTominay success

Napoli signed Scott McTominay from United in August.Marino, discussing Billy Gilmour, told Radio Marte: "Yes, I see that kind of quality in him. I would see it as a good deal, as an operation. (Giuliano) Simeone deserves to play more and carves out the spaces he can, but Raspadori must grow. Being able to sell a quality striker could give the possibility of starting negotiations in roles where competitiveness is less important. "I would see Rashford as a good fit and also another purchase at the back: a defender could be needed. "Which of the summer purchases did I like the most? McTominay: if I said otherwise, I would be wrong. The Scotsman is the purchase that impressed me the most: I am convinced that he has very important room for growth. He is a driving force: we will see him even stronger than now. "David Neres is another player I really like: it’s a shame he can’t find consistency in playing time, but (Matteo) Politano is doing extraordinary things. In short, it’s a shame for Neres, but he found an extraordinary Politano. The Brazilian, in my opinion, can have space as a second striker, even if it’s difficult to take away (Khvicha) Kvaratskhelia’s place."

'Of course he will be there' - Vitinha confident CR7 will be at 2026 World Cup

2025-03-08 22:10:38

Cristiano Ronaldo is "not going to give up" and will feature at the 2026 World Cup, according to Portugal team-mate Vitinha. The Selecao skipper holds the international record for the most caps (216) and most goals (133) since making his senior bow in August 2003. Cristiano Ronaldo is "not going to give up" and will feature at the 2026 World Cup, according to Portugal team-mate Vitinha. The Selecao skipper holds the international record for the most caps (216) and most goals (133) since making his senior bow in August 2003. Ronaldo also captained Portugal to their triumphs at Euro 2016 and the inaugural Nations League three years later. The 39-year-old has appeared in five separate editions of the World Cup between 2006 and 2022, yet football's biggest prize has eluded him. However, he was subjected to widespread criticism after failing to score at Euro 2024, where Portugal bowed out at the quarter-final stage after losing to France on penalties, while many claim his presence is now hindering his nation's progress. Ronaldo will be 41 when the World Cup is held in North America, but international colleague Vitinha is adamant the Al-Nassr forward will be present for their country. "39 years old and still a starter for the national team, I have no explanation for this longevity," the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder told RMC podcast Rothen s’enflamme. "He has already said it, and I imagine it's the professionalism he has in everything he does. In the morning, in the evening, every day of his career, it's incredible. "I can imagine the efforts and sacrifices he must make and has made. And I also imagine that's what has kept him in this condition at 39 years old. "It's a privilege for me. We are small, we are children, we dream of playing with him one day, and it's happening. "Luckily, I've had quite a few years to enjoy the national team with him. Of course, he will be there [at the 2026 World Cup]; he's not going to give up."

Yet Flick feels it is wrong that LaLiga is playing on in the wake of the flash floods that have devastated regions of eastern Spain, with Valencia particularly impacted. Madrid's game against Valencia was naturally postponed, but most other fixtures in Spain's top tier are going ahead. "If it were me, I might [suspend LaLiga] because it is an incredible tragedy for Valencia and Spain as a whole," Flick said. "We have spoken with Ferran [Torres] who is from the area, and it is not easy to decide whether the game should be played or not. "It is a tragedy. It was something similar in Germany three years ago, it is horrible. We will do everything we can to help. The rest is for LaLiga to decide." Barca do hold a brilliant record against Espanyol, having not lost in their last 26 encounters with their city rivals. Flick, though, warned his side against any complacency. "I know what a Barca-Espanyol derby means. It will be a tough match, for sure. After a fantastic week, it is important to be at 100% tomorrow, with intensity and maximum quality," Flick said. "We always prepare well for the next game. After the celebrations, we focus on the next game. We work on what we want tomorrow. It's a very long game in the league and we focus on the next game." Barca have taken 30 points from their first 11 league matches this season, their second-highest tally at this stage of a campaign in the competition, after 31 points in the 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2017-18 seasons.

Man Utd player ratings: Casemiro back to brilliant best

RUUD VAN NISTELROOY got off to a winning start as Manchester United beat Leicester 5-2 in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford. Suddenly, scoring goals looked easy as fans inside Old Trafford screamed "Attack, attack, attack" during United's first win post-Erik ten Hag. United played with smiles on their faces as Casemiro netted a screamer inside 15 minutes. Alejandro Garnacho doubled the home side's lead in the 27th minute before Leicester drew one back through Bilal El Khannouss five minutes later. BrunoFernandes bagged his first goal of the season, albeit via a huge deflection, in the 36th minute. Casemiro then fired in his second of the evening, before Conor Coady hit on the verge of half-time to add another twist in the tale. United looked frail at the back at times, but Fernandes made if five in the 57th minute. Here is how SunSport's Katherine Walsh rated the Manchester United players… Altay Bayindir - 6 Although United dominated, he looked shaky when Leicester's chances came. Flapped with a dodgy save which caused Leicester's 33rd minute goal. Looked to repeat it with McAteer's shot just before half-time. Victor Lindelof - 6 Hasn't got the partnership with De Ligt yet as they both failed to deal with crosses too often. But wasn't really troubled consistently in the absence of Jamie Vardy. Matthijis De Ligt - 6 United never looked entirely comfortable at the back and a more potent attack could have caused much more trouble. Kasey McAteer got the better of De Ligt a few times and he was hauled off in the 71st minute forJonnyEvans. Lisandro Martinez - 6 Looked vulnerable at left-back, with Lindelof filling in at centre-back. James Justin often had acres of space. Diogo Dalot - 5 Back in his beloved right-hand side and told to push into midfield but often left his defensive channel wide open. Passed back all too often and keptJustinonside in the first half. But assisted Garnacho's opener though after collecting Casemiro's stunning lofted pass . Casemiro - 8 The star of the show. A stunning first-half showing saw Casemiro score a brace after a bagging a 30-yard screamer for United's opening goal inside 15 minutes. He was involved in Garnacho's goal too. Came up with a number of key defensive headers in the second-half. Manuel Ugarte - 7 Conceded early fouls but worked hard. Bruno Fernandes - 7 Restored United's 2-0 lead with his first finish of the season. Played with a smile on his face, which we often haven't seen this season. Dummied the ball for Casemiro's worldie and scored his second of the evening in the 57th minute after rolling it under Ward tapping it into an empty net. Marcus Rashford - 6 Lots the ball a lot in the early 30 minutes. Flick didn't not coming off and hauled off again in the 60th minute. He's only played a full 90 minutes this seasonTHREEtimes this season. Alejandro Garnacho - 7 A goal and assist for Garnacho, who attended the Ballon d'Or on Monday. The winger doubled United's lead inside 27 minutes after a well worked team move and provided Casemiro's opener. Looked a constant threat throughout and was taken off 20 minutes from time to be saved for Sunday's clash against Chelsea. Joshua Zirkzee - 4 Worked hard but never looked confident on the ball and struggled to get involved in the seven-goal thriller. Never on his toes either. But the only consolation is that he was involved in Casemiro's second (United's fourth). Subs Amad (60' for Rashford) - 7 Instant impact from the bench. The youngster almost scored an overhead kick with his first touch of the evening. Mazraoui (60' for Martinez) - 6 Hojlund (71' for Garnacho) - 6 Jonny Evans (71' for De Ligt) - 6

The World Cup winner has spoken about potentially becoming a manager after retiring from the game as a player. Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi has spoken about becoming a manager in the future. The attacker, now 37-years-old, spoke to Fabrizio Romano in which he was asked about his future. Despite the player being a key element of Inter Miami’s attack this season, injuries have hampered his ability to participate fully in the season, with teammates taking on the responsibility of propelling the side to the top of the Eastern Conference in MLS. ‘I don’t think I want to be a coach’ “I don’t think I want to be a coach after I retire“, Messi admitted, ”butI’m not sureof what I want to do in the future." Messi‘s contract with the MLS club runs until 2025, and there is already plenty of speculation as to whether or not he will continue at Inter Miami, move elsewhere or hang up his boots. As for how he feels about the future, the 8-time Ballon d’Or winner stuck to his line of having fun and living in the present day: “I value a lot more than before everything I do daily, so the only thing that I’m thinking about is playing, training and enjoying myself.” Messi on World Cup 2026 He also spoke aboutparticipating in the 2026 World Cup, to be held across the US, Canada and Mexico. “The truth is that I don’t know, I have been asked several times, especially in Argentina. I hope to have a good end of the season and then a good preseason, something I didn’t have last season because of all the traveling we did." “From then on”, he added, “I want to see what happens, to see how I feel. A lot of things always happen in football. There’s still a long way to go, so I’m not thinking too much about it. I’m going to live day by day without thinking too much about the future.” In terms of the right here, right now, Messi has a huge game to focus on, with Inter Miami set to go up against Atlanta United in the MLS playoffs. Neymar's MLS return considered with 'close friend' Lionel Messi at Inter Miami

Rumours are swirling around Brazilian football sensation Neymar after he splashed out on a swanky property in Miami, sparking whispers of a potential move to join forces with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at Inter Miami. The 32-year-old has reportedly dropped a cool $26 million (£20 million) on a sprawling 13,000-foot waterfront pad in the posh Bal Harbor area. Despite currently playing for Saudi team Al-Hillal, where injuries have limited his appearances since his 2023 transfer, the buzz about his future is growing. Inter Miami's gaffer Tata Martino, who previously managed Neymar during the 2013-14 season at Barcelona, has urged fans not to get ahead of themselves, though. "Now everyone who buys a house in Miami is coming? " he quipped. He acknowledged the allure of having Messi and co. in the squad but pointed out the logistical hurdles, saying, "With Leo and the boys here, anything is possible. But what I can't imagine is if the league doesn't make the salary issue more flexible, how it would be carried out." Martino also highlighted the need for additional support when discussing such high-profile transfers, adding, "It seems to me that when we talk about this, another type of support is needed. We cannot talk or mention a player because he bought a house here or has a girlfriend from Fort Lauderdale." Neymar's time at Barcelona, particularly when part of the formidable "MSN" attacking trio with Messi and Suarez from 2014-2017, was nothing short of legendary: they clinched two La Liga titles, three Copa del Reys, and the 2015 Champions League together. Neymar first joined Barcelona in 2013 under Martino's leadership, just before Suarez came on board, and despite racking up 87 points, they narrowly missed out on the league title to Atletico Madrid on the season's final day. Former FC Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino reminisced about starting at the club alongside Neymar, saying: "My start at Barcelona coincided with Ney's," and highlighting the quality of that experience by adding, "It was a good year. To be able to coach players of that caliber always will be a special memory." He weighed in on Inter Miami’s roster challenges mentioning their three designated player spots are full — having Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Leonardo Campana — leaving no room for Neymar under current rules (Suarez is categorized differently as an International Player). “The reality is that if there is something that the MLS has, it is that the rules are strict and can't be broken unless the MLS decides to change,” Martino elaborated. As Inter Miami prepares for their subsequent match with Atlanta United — Martino's old squad — they are buoyed by a previous victory where Suarez secured an early lead with a goal in the second minute, culminating in a 2-1 win. They look forward to the next clash in Atlanta on Sunday; a win would pitch them against either Orlando City or Charlotte FC in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The scoring prowess within the team is notable — with Suarez tying for second with 21 regular season goals and Messi closely behind in4 fourth with 20, while DC United's ex-Liverpool striker Christian Benteke topped the chart with 23.

Jamie Redknapp criticises 'toxic' Man United players following Ten Hag's sacking

2025-03-06 16:07:42

Jamie Redknapp has criticised Manchester United's 'toxic' squad following the sacking of Erik ten Hag as Red Devils boss.Ten Hag was dismissed from his role after nearly two-and-a-half years in charge on Monday, with Ruud van Nistelrooy taking over on a temporary basis, including Wednesday's League Cup tie against Leicester. Jamie Redknapp has criticised Manchester United's 'toxic' squad following the sacking of Erik ten Hag as Red Devils boss. Ten Hag was dismissed from his role after nearly two-and-a-half years in charge on Monday, with Ruud van Nistelrooy taking over on a temporary basis, including Wednesday's League Cup tie against Leicester. It is expected that Ruben Amorim will take charge, though when remains to be seen as negotiations over his notice period at current club Sporting Lisbon continue. But Redknapp has suggested that the issues at the club are deeper than just the manager, with the players having to take a look at themselves, according to the pundit. Speaking on Sky Sports, he suggested that there's a lot that needs changing at the club and called for the next boss to be given time.' You have to remember that everyone talks about Ten Hag and how disappointing it has been for him,' he said. 'You have to take this group of players in terms of context of other managers and getting them dismissed as well. 'This group has been really poor. It has been quite toxic for a while in terms of not performing, not doing enough, getting managers sacked regularly and for my liking too easily. 'It feels like, "It's fine, the manager will go, someone else will come in". That culture has to change. So whoever comes inn, first of all they have to make sure they give them time, he is not going to go in there and it will be an easy job. 'He is going to need time to get the players he needs, play the way he wants to play and be given that luxury because if after six months people start complaining, it is not going to work. He needs time.' Van Nistelrooy picked a strong side for his first game in charge, opting to use the same 4-2-3-1 that Ten Hag used during the game. It featured Lisandro Martinez at left back while Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro played together in midfield, with captain Bruno Fernandes also playing. Izzy Christiansen, also speaking on Sky, noted how the United players' efforts would be of note during Wednesday's game due to it being the first one without Ten Hag in the dugout. 'It's going to be fascinating to see how the players perform,' she said. 'Do they feel like a weight has been lifted? Like they are now under the spotlight even more? 'It is quite a good fixture for the players and we will see how they perform.'

Man United and Chelsea combined XI: Only THREE Red Devils stars in

Though both sides have fallen from their lofty heights of yesteryear, a clash between Manchester United and Chelsea is always an entertaining one. Their most recent meeting saw the Blues triumph in dramatic fashion as Cole Palmer scored a hat-trick - including a last-minute winner - to help seal a 4-3 victory. Prior to that seven-goal thriller at Stamford Bridge, the west London side had won just once against the Red Devils since 2019. However, times have changed and with the recent departure of Erik ten Hag fresh in the air, there may not be a better time to play United. Here, Mail Sport provides a combined XI between the two Premier League giants. Goalkeeper - Andre Onana One year ago, you'd be laughed at for putting United shot-stopper Andre Onana in any combined line-up, but, in the present day, it seems the most sensible option. The Cameroonian endured a number of struggles in his debut campaign for the Red Devils however, in the 2024-25 season, he's beginning to find his feet. Perhaps this was best encapsulated by a terrific double-save during their recent 1-1 draw against Fenerbahce in the Europa League. He just gets the nod over Robert Sanchez. Defenders Right-back - Reece James Though the Chelsea captain has spent (what feels like) a lifetime on the sidelines due to injury, there's no doubt that he's the best available option at right-back. The England international only lasted 53 minutes as he made his long-awaited comeback during their 2-1 defeat by Liverpool before playing the full 90 minutes in Chelsea's win over Newcastle. It seems somewhat harsh on James' team-mate Malo Gusto, who has shone in the absence of the 24-year-old, but the Blues captain cannot be overlooked. Centre-back - Wesley Fofana The first position in this side which feels like it's up for serious debate. We've opted for Wesley Fofana - over the likes of United's Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt - due to how well he's performed since his injury comeback. The French defender was ruled out of the entire 2023-24 campaign after suffering an ACL injury but you wouldn't be able to tell that he'd spent a year on the sidelines. He's been a composed figure at the back for Enzo Maresca's side and has done well to make Blues fans forget about the absence of Thiago Silva. Centre-back - Levi Colwill The obvious choice in defence. The England international has become a mainstay in Chelsea's line-up - having started all nine of their league matches - and continues to impress with each display. Data shows that Colwill is one of the top-performing central defenders in the top-flight and his performance in their win over Newcastle certainly supports that. The former Brighton and Huddersfield loanee barely offered the Magpies' attackers a sniff at goal, as he finally asserts himself as a guaranteed Chelsea starter. Left-back - Noussair Mazraoui Though left-back is not his natural position, we've opted for Moroccan star Noussair Mazraoui as the best man for the job in our combined XI. The former Ajax star has hit the ground running since arriving at Old Trafford - barring a brief health scare - and has done well to impress despite United's shaky form in the campaign. He's often played on the right-side but, during their controversial defeat to West Ham, the Moroccan played on the left and did well to nullify Jarrod Bowen up until the late contentious penalty. Midfielders Central midfield - Moises Caicedo When he arrived at Chelsea for a record-breaking £115million, there were questions as to whether Caicedo would be able to live up the expectations. It's perhaps taken a year longer than the Ecuadorian would have liked but it finally seems as though he's managed to silence his doubters with his displays. Caicedo has established himself as Chelsea's most reliable midfielder which, in turn, has seen Enzo Fernandez, who cost over £100m last year, lose his place in the side. Though his stats in regard to goal contributions may not impress at a glance, those who have watched Caicedo will appreciate what he brings to the Chelsea side. Central midfield - Romeo Lavia Unfortunately for Man United fans, their side simply does not have an available midfielder that justifies a spot in this combined XI. Had Kobbie Mainoo been fit, he would have slotted in as the second central midfielder. However, the displays of Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte have left a lot to be desired and so it's Lavia who steps in to the double pivot. The former Southampton midfielder has earned the trust of Maresca and displaced the aforementioned Fernandez with his impressive showings in the heart of midfield. Forwards Right wing - Cole Palmer The easiest selection in the entire team. Cole Palmer has been the best player in the Premier League this year and refuses to show any signs of slowing up. The Chelsea forward lit up the top-flight in his debut campaign with the Blues last season and has carried that form into 2024-25 after impressing at Euro 2024. He leads the league in total goal contributions - with seven scored and another five assisted - but even without his goal involvements, he's been a standout figure. The composure shown when on the ball simply cannot be trained nor nurtured and, even as a neutral, it's exciting to see how Palmer will develop over the years. Attacking midfield - Bruno Fernandes Yes, that's right. Bruno Fernandes makes it into this team. Though the Manchester United captain has been underwhelming this season - having failed to score a league goal - his talent cannot be argued against. Just take a look at Diogo Dalot's horror miss against West Ham. Fernandes unlocked the defence with one expertly-placed ball over the top, only to be let down by a misfiring team-mate yet again. He may not have shown it much this season but Fernandes is without question United's best and most reliable player. Left wing - Pedro Neto There were a plethora of options for this position - with Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho all considered - but it's £54million summer signing Neto who takes the spot. The former Wolves star has hit the ground running since arriving at Stamford Bridge and has picked up two assists in his last two games for the Blues. His pace and prowess has proved difficult for defenders in the league for years and it appears the Portuguese international is only getting better. Striker - Nicolas Jackson Similarly to United goalkeeper Onana, Nicolas Jackson has transformed himself from a laughing stock last season to one of the league's most reliable forwards this year. With six goals, three assists and a handful of impressive performances - there's little more that Jackson can do to appease the Chelsea faithful. Not only does Jackson boast impressive numbers but he's become a real nuisance for opposition defenders with his impressive speed and willingness to run in behind. There's no question that the Senegal forward deserves a spot over Rasmus Hojlund.

Gakpo still wants more despite firing Liverpool into EFL Cup quarter-finals

Cody Gakpo proved the hero for Liverpool as his two goals downed Brighton in the EFL Cup fourth round, though the forward still sees room for improvement. The Netherlands international provided the Reds with some much-needed attacking force after the disappointing confirmation that Diogo Jota will be out until after the next international break. Gakpo scored both his goals when cutting in from the left-hand side, before fellow winger Luis Diaz also got on the scoresheet. Simon Adingra and Tariq Lamptey both scored late on to offer Liverpool a scare, though Slot's side held on for a 3-2 victory that sent them into the last eight. However, Gakpo believes his match-winning performance could have been improved. "I think two good goals, but I think maybe it should have been more, or maybe I get an assist as well." he told Sky Sports. Liverpool fielded a young side at the Amex Stadium, with goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros and England Under-21 midfielder Tyler Morton among the starters. Gakpo lauded the impact of an inexperienced side against Fabian Hurzeler's hosts. "Very good. Morton, who doesn't start that often, started, then Trey [Nyoni] came in, and the goalkeeper obviously. I think they did fantastic," he added. "It's not easy if you don’t play that often, then suddenly have to play. Everyone did well, so really proud of them and really proud of the team." Liverpool will face Southampton, who sneaked past Stoke City on Tuesday, in the quarter-finals, with Gakpo intent on chasing silverware with the Reds. "Every competition you play in, you want to win," he continued. "So, [I am] very happy we went through and on to the next."

Inigo Martinez labels Barcelona teammates as “absent-minded”

2025-03-21 07:08:57

Inigo Martinez has been one of several revelations for Barcelona this season. Inigo Martinez has been one of several revelations for Barcelona this season. At the end of the previous campaign, he was considered to be fourth-choice centre-back, and while that could still be the case once Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen once they return from long-term injuries, he has thrown down the gauntlet to be a nailed starter. Alongside Pau Cubarsi, Martinez has been excellent, and there is no doubt that Hansi Flick will have also been very pleased with his performances. The experience defender spoke on his adaption to the German manager’s style of play, as per Sport. “Flick, from the moment he arrived, had things clear, how he wanted us to play. In the end, even taking risks, I think it gives us more benefits than anything else. So, we continue with our philosophy, our idea. We do a lot of damage every time we steal. The fact that the opponent enters many times offside is usually complicated for them. You saw it in the last match. We enjoy ourselves. In the back you don’t enjoy much, to be honest, but we enjoy something.” Martinez also spoke on Barcelona’s well-documented high defensive line, that has been responsible for so many opposition offsides. He is happy with the risk, although he also jokingly called out two of his fellow defenders for not always being alert to the dangers. “Obviously, when you have fast strikers who know how you play and you see 50 meters behind you, of course you suffer. It is not easy, but when the back four get along so well, they are absolutely sure that 9 times out of 10 they will be offside. So, we take risks, it’s our way of playing. We are doing well and we will continue to do so. “Balde is the most absent-minded of all on the back line, although Jules (Kounde) is also absent-minded from time to time, but hey, I have him much further away than Balde. It’s also true that he usually has to put up with me a lot during the game.”

Klopp baffled by criticism over Red Bull role

Jurgen Klopp is baffled by the criticism he has received since agreeing to become the new global head of soccer at Red Bull. The German reportedly signed a five-year contract with the energy drinks brand earlier this month, in what is his first role since leaving Liverpool in June. Starting in January, Klopp will be responsible at the strategic management level for Red Bull's international network of clubs, which includes RB Leipzig, New York Red Bulls, Red Bull Bragantino and Red Bull Salzburg (managed by former assistant Pep Lijnders). The 57-year-old will advise the teams on playing philosophy, transfer strategy and coaching development, though former clubs Borussia Dortmund and Mainz have been among those scrutinising his move. Many felt his decision to join Red Bull was inconsistent with claims he was "running out of energy" when announcing his departure from Anfield earlier this year. Speaking on the Einfach mal Luppen podcast, hosted by former Real Madrid and Germany midfielder Toni Kroos and his brother Felix, Klopp addressed the situation. "I really don't know what exactly I could have done for everyone to be happy," he said. "I didn't want to step on anybody's toes, definitely not, and, personally, I love all of my ex-clubs. "I'm 57, so I can still work for a couple more years, but I don't really see myself on the sideline [as a coach] for the time being. "But it was always clear that I wasn't going to do nothing at all. And then this story with Red Bull came into the picture, and for me, it's outstanding." Explaining his new role, he added: "Basically, I'm an advisor. Hopefully, I can bring calm in different ways and, in other situations, assess things correctly and help the coaches. "But I just want to support, not interfere, because I know how disruptive that is. Instead, I want to pass on my experience and work in the world that I know best." Damien Duff attempts to call Jose Mourinho after League of Ireland title success

Former Chelsea winger Damien Duff was left hanging by Jose Mourinho after attempting to call his former manager to celebrate Shelbourne's League of Ireland title.Duff - who won the Premier League twice with Chelsea during his playing career - went into the final day of the League of Ireland season with his side holding a two-point lead over Shamrock Rovers. Former Chelsea winger Damien Duff was left hanging by Jose Mourinho after attempting to call his former manager to celebrate Shelbourne's League of Ireland title. Duff - who won the Premier League twice with Chelsea during his playing career - went into the final day of the League of Ireland season with his side holding a two-point lead over Shamrock Rovers. With Shamrock Rovers winning on the final day and boasting a superior goal difference, Duff's win need a win away at fourth-placed Derry City to be sure of lifting the title. Duff's men scored in the 84th minute through former Manchester United youth player Harry Wood, with his effort proving enough to win Shelbourne's first league title for 18 years. The Shelbourne boss then vowed to give his players 'monkey' - €500 (£420) towards their celebrations - if Fenerbahce boss Mourinho did not answer when he attempted to call him in the dressing room. After Mourinho failed to pick up, Duff joked he would go 'double or quits on the next one', before the 45-year-old jokingly suggested his former Chelsea boss had responded. Duff later suggested that the mentality of his Shelbourne players was the closest he has experienced to Mourinho's Premier League title winning side at Chelsea in 2005. 'I died on the pitch for Jose, that's what I've always done,' Duff told the Irish Independent. 'Everyone hated Chelsea, everyone hates us, blah, blah, blah. Another chapter in the story. 'I told the lads beforehand that the last time I felt that mentality and feeling was with the Chelsea 2005 group. We'd sweat blood and tears for each other and I haven't tasted it since but I've tasted it for the last few years with these guys.' Duff revealed that Mourinho had played a role in the build-up to the season defining match. The legendary manager sent a private message for Duff to show to the squad, with his message shown to the players two hours before kick-off. 'Why Jose?' Because do I try and build, have we tried to build a siege mentality, us against the world like he did? Absolutely,' Duff said. 'It would be mad not to tap into him. So Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, there was posts on the Instagram page. Powerful lyrics, powerful words that would resonate and have a meaning to tie in for tonight. 'Then, in the team meeting, there was a private message from Jose speaking about what it takes to win a title as a team, as an individual. It blew the guys away. A video that was shown in the Everglades two hours before the game.' Mourinho was not the only legendary sporting figure to help out in Shelbourne's bid for the title. Duff also revealed rugby great Sir Ian McGeechan, the former Scotland and Lions boss, had also been used as motivation. Shelbourne ended the season with 63 points from their 36 matches. Shamrock finished second with 61, ahead of St Patrick's Athletic with 59. Duff has been in charge at Shelbourne since November 2021. https://img.allfootballapp.com/www/M00/5A/0A/720x-/-/-/CgAGVWcmXAeAFVocAAISfsJau3A201.jpg After retiring from playing in December 2015, he started his coaching career at Shamrock, where he initially worked with the U15 side. He later worked as part of Ireland's backroom staff, starting with the U15s before becoming assistant manager to Stephen Kenny. Duff gained further coaching experience at Glasgow giants Celtic before eventually taking the No 1 job at Shelbourne. Prior to Friday's dramatic season finale, Shelbourne had not been champions of Ireland since 2006.

Arsenal attempted to muster a response against the hosts, but Mikel Arteta's side proved unable to find a leveller. The defeat leaves Arsenal at risk of falling further adrift of reigning champions Man City and Liverpool in the Premier League title race, while victory provided a major boost to Newcastle's season. Mail Sport's Issan Khan rates the players at St James' Park. NEWCASTLE UNITED (4-3-3) NICK POPE: 6.5 Good presence in the box on aerial crosses. A clean-sheet to boot, too. TINO LIVRAMENTO: 6.5 Was not deterred by Gabriel Martinelli’s runs forward and kept resolutely to his task. FABIAN SCHAR: 6.5 Didn’t give the attackers anything to feed off. Made some solid clearances. DAN BURN: 6.5 Did well against Kai Havertz in duels. Played in sync with Schar. LEWIS HALL: 6.5 Coped well at the back under pressure from Arsenal’s quick men. BRUNO GUIMARAES: 6.5 Part of a midfield which exploited a lack of creativity from the opposition. SEAN LONGSTAFF: 7.5 Harried around in the middle, didn’t give an inch. Caused lots of issues for the Arsenal midfield and strong in tackles. JOE WILLOCK: 6.5 Created much pressure with direct runs and helped out defensively, too ANTHONY GORDON: 8.5 A top-class assist for Alexander Isak’s goal. Newcastle’s bright spark going forward, showing much skill. ALEXANDER ISAK: 8 Great header to score Newcastle’s goal. Lively in and around the box all game. JOELINTON: 6.5 Gave Thomas Partey a headache on that right flank. His height was an added bonus in a wide position. Manager - EDDIE HOWE - 6.5 ARSENAL (4-3-3) DAVID RAYA: 6 Made some decent saves and caught well. Isak’s header was unstoppable. THOMAS PARTEY: 5.5 Newcastle’s right flank kept catching him out in defensive positions. Was not afforded the extra protection because of the midfield battle between the two teams. Better in second half when moved to midfield . WILLIAM SALIBA: 6 A fair display, competing well in the duels against Joelinton and Isak. GABRIEL: 6 Beaten in the air by Isak for the goal. JURRIEN TIMBER: 6 Enjoyed much possession in the first half. Tried to make things happen in the opposition half. DECLAN RICE: 6 Hung in there with a tough task of mopping up in front of the backline and trying to get play forward. Missed a headed chance in injury time which he should have scored. MIKEL MERINO: 5.5 Static in the middle and seemed to get overrun. Team got better after his substitution. LEANDRO TROSSARD: 5.5 Off the pace and the things he attempted kept failing to come off. BUKAYO SAKA: 5.5 A very quiet first half. And in the second period he was often shut out. KAI HAVERTZ: 6 His best attributes, like physicality and duels, were nullified by the lack of creativity around him. GABRIEL MARTINELLI: 6 Kept getting the ball and drove forward. End product wasn’t there, though. Substitutes ETHAN NWANERI: 6 Did not receive the ball much at all, but movement was fluid. OLEKSANDR ZINCHENKO: 6 Couldn’t affect a game which was already becoming out of grasp. BEN WHITE: 5.5 Gave the ball away couple times. With his injury, was likely used out of necessity. GABRIEL JESUS: 5.5 No chances of note. Manager - MIKEL ARTETA: 5.5 That’s now three games without a win in the Premier League. Referee – JOHN BROOKS: 6 Game nearly get out of hand at times but kept a lid on it.

Frank Soo and the footballers that followed the Stoke City and England legend

2025-03-26 10:38:45

“Frank Soo was the first person of Chinese heritage and East Asian heritage to play in the English Football League and the first person from an Asian background to play for England,” explains Frank Soo Foundation chair Alan Lau. “Frank Soo was the first person of Chinese heritage and East Asian heritage to play in the English Football League and the first person from an Asian background to play for England,” explains Frank Soo Foundation chair Alan Lau. That England debut came in a wartime international in 1942, making Soo the first person of colour to play for the Three Lions - Plymouth Argyle trailblazer Jack Leslie, who was Black, was famously denied the opportunity to do so 17 years earlier because of the colour of his skin, despite earning an England call-up. Soo made nine England appearances made during the Second World War, but wartime games were not recognised as official matches by the Football Association. Soo and others who only played during the war never received an international cap. While the Leslie family received an honorary cap at Wembley Stadium last year, the Soo family are still waiting for his honorary England cap to this day. Soo, who had an English mother and Chinese father, was snapped up as a teenager by Stoke City in 1933 from Liverpool-based Prescot Cables. His talent was identified by the same person who spotted Sir Stanley Matthews - a man regarded by many as one of the greatest players of his generation. "The reports from his contemporaries were saying how good he (Soo) was," Lau says. "He was the captain at Stoke, he captained Sir Stanley Matthews, he was the captain at Leicester (later in his career) and he also captained the RAF team." Matthews and Soo also played together at national level during the Second World War, with some pointing to the discrimination suffered by Leslie as the reason why Soo never got an England call-up either side of the war. "He represented his country [in every sense] during the Second World War. He was in the Royal Air Force," Soo's grand nieceJacqui Sooexplains. "There was a cartoon in which he was portrayed as a Chinese figure and it said why is this person playing football for England and representing the national side - I think that had a detrimental effect on his football career." Asians in the Premier League | Nev: Park was class Against all odds, a number of Asian-heritage players have followed in Soo's footsteps, overcoming adversity to get on to the pitch in English football. Sky SportspunditGary Nevilleplayed with one of the best Asian international footballers ever to grace the top division of the English game. Former Manchester United and South Korea internationalJi-Sung Parkis one of just 47 Asian internationals to have played in the Premier League. "Having an Asian in Ji-Sung Park playing for such a big club, it had a big impact on British football. It had a big impact in Korea as well and in Asian football," Neville says. "Ji-Sung Park was a great team-mate, on the pitch and off the pitch and a dream of a person off the pitch in respect of his professionalism. He was very quiet, very humble, someone who was popular in the dressing room with all the players. He had a smile on his face, but very serious about his work. "He was one of those players that you would put at the very top of the most underrated players that you would ever have played with at Manchester United. "If we had a real problem defensively in a full-back area. Ji-Sun Park would play on that side and would double up with his full-back. He would do the donkey work, the hard work that basically is needed to be done to win a football match, which is not always the beautiful game. "It's making sure that you protect and stop, and hassle and harass. And that's what he did - he pressed. We talk a lot about pressing a lot now - Ji-Sun Park did nothing but press. If Manchester United gave the ball away, he was always the first to react in a transition. We think of these as being new words, but he was doing that back then. "He famously marked Andrea Pirlo, man-to-man in the San Siro. He doubled up on Lionel Messi in the Nou Camp. He played big roles for us defensively, but also was very important going forward." Park changed perceptions in the English game just like Soo did decades earlier. But less than one per cent of players in the history of the Premier League have been Asian internationals - less than any other continent - with the highest number coming from Europe (79 per cent), according to figures provided by the Premier League towards the end of last season. Today, the presence of Asians in football extends further, with visible representation now in disability football and at different levels of the women's game. Sikh-Punjabi attackerKira Raiwas part of the Derby County side that made history by lifting the National Plate last season, and is one of the women breaking down barriers for British South Asians in football. "People out there playing sports across the country of a South Asian heritage were not really given the platform to become visible," she says. "Now they can see people that have paved the way and can think 'okay, if they can do it, I can do it'." Azeem Amirbecame England's youngest-ever B1 blind footballer at the time of his international debut for the Three Lions in 2018. "If I'm able to do something that people can only dream about and play for my country [I'm happy and proud], he says. "If we can create a cultural shift within society, I can say I did more than just play, I made a difference." Former Liverpool and Arsenal wingerJimmy Carterwas one of the first British South Asians to play in the Premier League. But his Asian heritage - through his father Maurice who hailed from the city of Lucknow in India - has only become more widely known in the last decade. "Back in the day, and we are talking about over 30 years ago, there might have been an opinion that football is not for Asians," Carter says. "For me to have represented two of the biggest clubs in world football in Arsenal and Liverpool was beyond my wildest dreams as a little kid, but back then, obviously, no-one really knew that I had Asian heritage. "To some degree, I regret not giving that more of a voice [in order to inspire the next generation]." Former Eastern Eye sports editorZohaib Rashidthinks it's imperative to understand and learn from the experiences of former players in order to tackle the severe under-representation of South Asians in English football. "What was their upbringing like? What was the culture like? What were the barriers that they faced and how did they overcome them? Those are important questions," he says. "We need to know what it was that was their strength. Because from that, we can build strength in us." Ruud van Nistelrooy has arrived at Old Trafford ahead of his first game as interim boss. The former Manchester United striker has taken command of the club in the absence of a permanent boss, with Erik ten Hag leaving Old Trafford earlier this week after a poor start to the season. The Red Devils take on fellow Premier League outfit Leicester City in the Carabao Cup for the right to reach the last-eight of the competition. Coincidentally, the Carabao Cup was the first of two domestic trophies won by Ten Hag, with which he ended a six-year wait for silverware. Now though the Red Devils face the Foxes in the first game of the post Ten Hag era on home turf. Van Nistelrooy was appointed his compatriot's second-in-command over the summer ahead of his third, yet ultimately ill-fated, campaign at the helm. The former United No 9 has had success as a manager in his own right, having overseen 50 games as boss of PSV Eindhoven in 2022-23. Van Nistelrooy in that time lost only eight of his games, winning 34 in a hugely impressive debut managerial term. United's wait for a new permanent manager may not be too long, though, with the club circling ever closer to Ruben Amorim. Amorim arrived at Sporting Club's HQ on Wednesday morning as he had promised to conduct training, though it is understood that some players are not best pleased with the prospect of a mid-season departure. It was confirmed by the Portuguese club on Tuesday that the £8.3million required to trigger Amorim's release clause had been paid, meaning the ball is now in the manager's court. However negotiations are on-going over the Sporting boss' notice period, which is believed to be a matter of weeks, rather than days. As such it is currently unlikely that Amorim would be in the dugout for United's clash with Chelsea, even if a full agreement should be reached in the coming days.

This week, Spain – and the Valencia community in particular – has been devastated by Storm Dana. Over 90 people have denied as a result of the damage caused by the adverse weather, and it also led to two La Liga matches (Valencia-Real Madrid and Villarreal-Rayo Vallecano) being postponed. However, there is a feeling that the entire MD12 fixture schedule should have been played at a later date, with many feeling that now is not the time to focus on football. Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick gave his thoughts on the subject when speaking ahead of Sunday’s fixture against Espanyol, as per MD. “I’m not sure (if the match should be postponed). We have Ferran who is from there. It is not easy to make a decision about what to do. Something similar happened three years ago in Germany. We support them, but it’s a matter that is decided by La Liga.” On the match itself, Flick made it known that his Barcelona side are fully focused on securing three points. “I know what this derby means. It will be a difficult match after a great week. It will be important to play 100% and with intensity. We always prepare well. It’s good to celebrate (our recent form) but we have to concentrate. In the session we concentrated a lot, the road is long. We are doing well and we have to be focused.”

Amorim to Man Utd: Outgoing Sporting boss explains decision to move

2025-03-02 02:00:31

Ruben Amorim revealed he asked to delay his Manchester United start time until the end of the season but was told it was "now or never" – as he passionately defended his exit to Sporting fans.Amorim was confirmed as United boss on Friday and will take Sporting's games against Manchester City and Braga next week before taking over at Old Trafford on November 11. Ruben Amorim revealed he asked to delay his Manchester United start time until the end of the season but was told it was "now or never" – as he passionately defended his exit to Sporting fans. Amorim was confirmed as United boss on Friday and will take Sporting's games against Manchester City and Braga next week before taking over at Old Trafford on November 11. The 39-year-old revealed he spent three days deciding his options - and changed his mind several times in the process - before eventually agreeing to move to Man Utd mid-season. Speaking after Sporting's win over Estrela, Amorim said: "At the beginning of the season, I had a talk with [President Frederico Varandas] and Hugo Viana [then-sporting director] and I said that whatever happened, this would be my last season with Sporting. The president is here, he can confirm that. "The season started, we know that we started very well. Then the Manchester United situation came and they appeared. They paid above the release clause. I never discussed anything with the president about this bargaining. The only question I made was only to go at the end of the season. "For three days, I said I wanted to stay until the end of the season. But I was told it was not possible, I was told it was now or never, or Manchester United would go for another option. "I had three days to make my decision. The change is radical in my life but I had three days to make this decision. That's what I did. "I have had other opportunities, the president and Viana can confirm this is not the first or the second time I was asked for by another team. "I wanted that one in Manchester. I want that context. That context allows me to do things my way. It's just like Sporting. There's a time when I have to take a step forward. It was harder for me than for any Sporting fan but I had to do this." Amorim: Another team offered me three times more than Man Utd Amorim continued in a lengthy, impassioned first answer press conference: "I mean, let's not go around the bush. "There was a club that said that if I rejected it now in six months I wouldn't get it, and I knew that in six months I will leave Sporting, so I did not want to regret not making this decision. "I know it was a disappointment to the Sporting fans and not take the risk or wait for the end of the season, and then I wouldn't have the only club I wanted to coach. "The president knows about this because I had other offers and I didn't want them before, but this one I did want so I made my decision. "But now I go home more happier because I have explained. People say 'it's about the money', but there was another team that that wanted to hire me before and they paid three times more than Manchester." Amorim: I will not sign Sporting players in January Amorim insisted Man Utd will not sign Sporting players - including in-demand striker Viktor Gyokeres, who scored four goals against Estrela on Friday - in the January transfer window "Gyokeres costs £100m," said Amorim. "It's very complicated. I will not take any of Sporting's players in January. But that's another story. "There was no revolt whatsoever [from the Sporting players about Amorim's exit]. But they were sad. "The players were anxious. We could feel the atmosphere was a little different. I have been with them for five years, they have been with me for five years. I even talked to them before I signed them. It's part of our characteristics to be close to the players. "They know I'm the coach until Braga [final game], then I'm leaving. But disappointment? Yes." The view from Portugal: how did Sporting fans react to Amorim? Sky Sports News' Gail Davis at the Estadio Jose Alvalade: "Amorim had Gyokeres to thank for more than just the four goals tonight - the striker lifted the atmosphere around the place. "The Sporting fans felt a little better about life as they left the Jose Alvalade Stadium. They had braved the deluge of rain before kick-off to voice their frustrations of feeling betrayed - not so much about Amorim's exit but the timing of it. "Come full-time, Amorim disappeared down the tunnel pretty quickly. He has one final home game - the Champions League encounter against Manchester City - to say his goodbyes. "A finale that brings a glimpse of what's to come and how Amorim might take on the challenge of life as a Premier League head coach." Who is Amorim? A former Benfica and Portugal midfielder, Amorim retired as a player in 2017 and two years later took up his first managerial job at Braga. The Portuguese then joined Sporting in March 2020, establishing himself as one of Europe's most sought-after young coaches, twice guiding the club to the Primeira Liga title. Amorim has also won the Taca da Liga - the Portuguese League Cup - on three occasions, twice with Sporting and once with Braga. Explaining Man Utd's thinking in appointing Amorim Sky Sports News' Melissa Reddy: When Sporting parted with €10m (£8.4m) to recruit a head coach without a UEFA Pro Licence and with only three months of top-flight experience on his CV from Braga in 2020, it was termed "absolute insanity". The scathing reaction from the club's fans and analysts in Portugal are still stored on message boards - the internet, after all, never forgets - and paints a sharp contrast to the sentiment now. Back then, Sporting's hierarchy were ridiculed for sanctioning such a big spend on an unknown quantity. "Another great deal by the board, €10m for unlicensed manager," one sarcastic comment read. This week, as Manchester United sacked Erik ten Hag and turned at the speed of light to Amorim, that same figure was a lightning rod for Sporting's decision-makers: how dare they set the fee so low for the biggest clubs in world football to steal their special one? The 39-year-old will be priceless to United if he delivers what they are convinced he has the ability to: a transformation of tactical identity, personality and proper football enjoyment. Ten Hag posts Man Utd farewell Erik ten Haghas released a statement in the wake of his Man Utd sacking, thanking the club's fans and pointing to the two trophies he won at Old Trafford - as well as saying his "dream has come to an end" with his dismissal. Interestingly, although Ten Hag mentions the warmth he received from "everyone at the club" there is no mention of the Man Utd players, staff or hierarchy... In a statement released via his agency, Ten Hag said: "Dear fans, let me start by thanking you. Thank you for always being there for the club. Whether it was a game far away or a tough match at Old Trafford, your support has been unshakeable. The atmosphere at Old Trafford has always been electrifying thanks to you. I felt it many times. "Also in away games, it gave the team and me an incredible feeling to hear the United chants taking over the opponents' stadiums, whether the game was in England, Europe or during the summer tours. "I always enjoyed meeting Manchester United fans throughout the world. Walking the streets and being able to chat with fans in England, Europe, Asia, Australia, the USA - you inspired me and radiated a strong sense of unity. That's what makes United supporters so special. "I want to thank you for giving me this feeling and for your support. I also want to thank the staff in every department of the club for their unwavering support in good times and bad. "We won two trophies - achievements that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Of course, my dream was to bring more trophies to the cabinet. Unfortunately, that dream has come to an end. "I wish all Manchester United fans nothing but success, trophies and glory. Your support and the warmth I received from everyone at the club helped me feel at home. "Thank you for this chapter in my life. Erik."

Ange Postecoglou's side inflicted Manchester City's first defeat of the 2024-25 campaign with a 2-1 victory at home in the fourth round. Timo Werner and Pape Sarr were both on target for Spurs, whose next test in the competition will come against United, who smashed Leicester City 5-2 to reach the next stage. That victory marked Ruud van Nistelrooy's first game in interim charge after Erik ten Hag's dismissal on Monday, though Sporting's Ruben Amorim is expected to soon be appointed at Old Trafford. Man Utd must find a way to keep Van Nistelrooy at Old Trafford, says Meulensteen

2025-03-06 05:31:21

Rene Meulensteen believes Manchester United must do everything in their power to keep Ruud van Nistelrooy at the club, amid Ruben Amorim's impending arrival.United confirmed the appointment of Sporting CP boss Amorim on Friday, four days after announcing they had parted ways with Erik ten Hag following a dismal run of form. Rene Meulensteen believes Manchester United must do everything in their power to keep Ruud van Nistelrooy at the club, amid Ruben Amorim's impending arrival. United confirmed the appointment of Sporting CP boss Amorim on Friday, four days after announcing they had parted ways with Erik ten Hag following a dismal run of form. The Red Devils currently sit 14th in the Premier League after their first nine games of the season, and welcome Chelsea to Old Trafford this Sunday. Van Nistelrooy, who joined Ten Hag's coaching staff in July, oversaw his first game as interim boss in midweek, earning a 5-2 win over Leicester City in the EFL Cup. Amorim will officially take charge on November 11, meaning the Dutchman will remain at the helm for United's fixtures against Chelsea, PAOK and Leicester. The Portuguese arrives at Old Trafford with an impressive resume, having guided Sporting to their first league title in 19 years, and winning the Primeira Liga again in 2023-24. His 120 victories in the league give him a 76.92% win ratio, which is the best of any Sporting coach on record. But former United coach Meulensteen believes it is crucial Van Nistelrooy remains at the club, with his experience vital in helping Amorim understand the pressures of the job. "I think the club will have to manufacture something. It's very clear that Amorim wants to bring his own staff, which I think is very understandable," Meulensteen told Stats Perform. "He can look at it and say: 'OK, Ruud has got some experience with the players, and he might be able to help me to tell me this and that and the other'. "That's the conversation he needs to have. If he doesn't see a place for him in and around the first team, then he has to be clear about that as well. "Because at the end of the day, if you see a little bit of what happened with Erik, let's assume if Amorim had said: 'listen I'm staying in Sporting, I'm not doing it, forget it', then obviously we wouldn't have these conversations. "Then, it would have been a little bit more quiet, and I would have said to Ruud: 'listen Ruud, you take over for now, right, and see how we go and see how you get on with it'. "And if that, for instance, started to come off, Ruud would have given the board and Ineos and all those people enough confidence to say: 'listen, I'll be more than capable of carrying on with it'. "Now they haven't gone that way, so I can also understand if the manager says: 'no, I don't want anybody that I don't know in that setup, because I really want to do my own thing'. "Ruud made it clear he wants to stay and be part of it, so at least that's a positive for the incoming manager. If the incoming manager has other plans, then the club has to find something different." Amorim will be United's youngest boss since 33-year-old Wilf McGuinness took charge of them on Boxing Day 1970 against Derby County. Since March 2020, when Amorim took charge, Sporting have the highest win percentage of any team across Europe's top 10 leagues (77% - 120 wins out of 156 games). His first game at the helm comes against Ipswich Town after the international break, but it remains to be seen whether Van Nistelrooy will remain alongside him.

Jurgen Klopp responds to criticism of controversial new job

Red Bull own several clubs worldwide, including RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga and MLS side New York Red Bulls. They also sponsor Red Bull Salzburg. Klopp is expected to hold a crucial role, and have a significant amount of influence, in each of these camps. His decision has however been met with controversy, with Red Bull causing controversy in German football when the company took over SSV Markranstadt and turned the club into RB Leipzig. Now, he has hit back at critics, claiming he could not take any other opinions into consideration when making the decision for the next phase of his career. Speaking on Toni Kroos' podcast, Klopp said: 'You cannot make your decision depending on what reactions there will be. 'I did not want to step on anyone's toes. I love all my former clubs, but I don't know what I could have done so that everyone is happy. 'I am 57 and can still work a few more years, but I did not see myself on the sidelines for now. It was clear for me that I would do something - so then Red Bull came.' 'I can't poll the fans and ask them, 'what should I do?' If I had gone to Bayern [Munich], there would have been a huge outcry in Dortmund,' he added. 'What should I do? I want to keep working. If you organise your life around trying to please everyone, you'll find you fail every day.' Klopp will not be involved in day-to-day operations at these clubs and he will instead act as an advisor on their playing philosophy, transfer strategy and coaching development. In layman's terms, he will spearhead their strategic vision. Red Bull's vast global scouting operation will also fall inside his wheelhouse. His next move had been unclear after he left Liverpool at the end of last season, but it took just a matter on months for things to play out. He will now be reunited with former assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders, who is in charge of Leipzig. He also confirmed that he does not see himself returning to management, meaning his spell with Liverpool will likely be his final role in a dugout. 'My only real option would have been to become a coach of a national side,' he said. 'But I don't want to be a coach any more.'

And the visitors knew their luck was out when Beto thought he’d levelled two minutes from the end only for the goal to be ruled out for offside after a lengthy VAR check. Everton will feel distraught at the end of their five-game unbeaten run having dominated the second half but for under-fire Southampton manager Russell Martin, the result could be a life-saver with goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale also making key saves. Given their predicament at the bottom of the table, the home side were disappointed not to have a shot on target in the first half though Taylor Harwood-Bellis’ missed with a close-range header and Cameron Archer dragged a shot wide when put through by Flynn Downes. But the only work Everton No1 Jordan Pickford had to do was push an Armstrong cross out of danger before anyone could get a tap-in at the far post. The visitors improved in the second half. Ashley Young, on his 400th Premier League start, set up Orel Mangala whose shot was brilliantly turned over by Ramsdale. The former Arsenal ‘keeper then turned a Michael Keane shot onto the post and clawed away a free-kick by Jesper Lindstrom heading to the top corner. Martin tried to change the narrative by sending on 18-year-old prodigy Tyler Dibling and he and Kyle Walker-Peters started to find joy combining down the right. However, they enjoyed a huge slice of good fortune when Beto diverted James Tarkowski’s cross onto the woodwork and Saints went up the other end to score. Sugawara’s intelligent low cross found Armstrong on the edge of the box and he rifled in his first Premier League goal of the season. Even then, Everton rallied again and thought they’d levelled when Beto controlled and flicked a finish past Ramsdale. It was an incredibly tight offside call. When it went in Southampton’s favour, Everton’s players were left sunk on their knees at the final whistle.

George Baldock funeral: Old teammates pay tribute to tragic player in Sheffield

Dele Alli and Dean Henderson lead the mourners at George Baldock's funeral on Wednesday afternoon. The former Sheffield United star - who was born in England but played international football for Greece since 2022 - was found dead in a swimming pool at his home near Athens on October 9. He had been playing for Panathinaikos since joining the 20-time Greek champions from the Blades in May, after leaving a lasting legacy upon English football. On Wednesday afternoon, a funeral was held for Baldock in Milton Keynes. Along with Alli and Henderson, the likes of Chris Wilder and Oliver McBurnie were also in attendance as they paid their respects to the former Blades star. Baldock made over 400 appearances in English football and spent seven seasons with Sheffield United until this summer, winning two promotions with the Blades. Baldock was found unresponsive in his pool after his partner, who was in the UK, reportedly raised the alarm because he was not answering his phone. Police investigating the drowning of the 31-year-old recovered CCTV showing him swimming in the pool at his Greek luxury apartment, as sources said it showed him swimming vigorously, before suddenly stopping and then sinking. The CCTV from a neighbouring property captured half the pool and showed him entering the water at about 6.45 in the evening, hours before his body was found. Baldock's family released a statement, revealing the footballer was due to fly home to celebrate his son's first birthday, but how they now 'mourn his loss'. Paying tribute, they said 'you were the most special father, fiancé, son, brother, uncle, friend, teammate and person. 'Your enthusiasm and infectious personality brought so much love to those that were fortunate enough to know you and those that adored you from the stands'. The family went on to say 'it was impossible not to love him', as they asked members of the public for privacy at this 'devastating time'. England and Greece paid an emotional tribute to Baldock ahead of their Nations League match at Wembley earlier this month. Players from both teams observed a minute's silence before the match at Wembley. A shirt with Baldock's name was held up by the Greek national team as part of the touching tribute before kick-off. Earlier this month, Alli paid tribute to Baldock - who were team-mates at MK Dons between 2011 and 2015 - via an emotional post on social media. 'No words I could type or pictures I could use would ever be enough,' Alli wrote on Instagram. 'May your spirit, ambition, determination and humility live on through those who had the honour of knowing you! I love you brother and will miss you forever! 'My thoughts, prayers and heart goes out to your family. Rest in peace Balders.' Meanwhile, Henderson - who played with Baldock at Sheffield United -  stood on the touchline and paid his respects during a minute's silence for Baldock prior to England and Greece's clash earlier this month. Baldock was born in Buckinghamshire and played more than 400 times in English football but earned 12 caps for Greece after qualifying through his grandmother. Earlier this month, the Hellenic Football Federation said: 'With deep sadness and pain, the National Team and the Hellenic Football Federation say goodbye to George Baldock. 'There are no words to describe the human pain caused by the news of the untimely loss of one of our young people. The moment calls for silence. 'Condolences to his family. Condolences from his second family. Goodbye'. Panathinaikos also paid tribute, writing: 'We are overwhelmed, we are shocked by the loss of our George. The family of Panathinaikos mourns his untimely death. We stand by the family and relatives of George Baldock.' Sheffield United posted on X: 'Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock,' they posted on X. 'The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him. 'The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George’s family and friends.' His boyhood club, MK Dons, said they were 'devastated' to hear the news, in an emotional post as they said he 'will always be one of our own'.

Former Reading forward Adam Le Fondre has announced he is to take a role with the City Football Group, the organisation overseeing Man City. The forward has represented 13 clubs during his playing career, which he admits is nearing an end at the age of 37. Former Reading forward Adam Le Fondre has announced he is to take a role with the City Football Group, the organisation overseeing Man City. The forward has represented 13 clubs during his playing career, which he admits is nearing an end at the age of 37. He is currently playing for FC United of Manchester, the protest club established after the Glazer's takeover of Manchester United back in 2005. The semi-professional team currently play in the Northern Premier League, the seventh tier of English football. Le Fondre is best known for his spell with Reading, where he scored 41 goals in 110 matches for the Royals between 2011 and 2014. After helping the Royals earn promotion in 2012, Le Fondre scored 12 goals in 34 matches in his sole season in the Premier League. Le Fondre scooped the Premier League’s Player of the Month award in January 2013 and boasts a ratio of 124.5 minutes-per-goal in the top flight. Speaking to the Reading Chronicle, Le Fondre revealed he is looking ahead to his new career as a video scout for the City Football Group when he hangs up his boots. 'I'm not naive to think that I will last forever so I've got things in place to get ready for when I do transition,' Fondre said. 'I've got a job ready to start and walk into my second career because I've still got 30-40 years left, or maybe more. 100 per cent I'm staying in football. Hopefully, I should be starting a role with The City Group as a scout for them in the emerging talent group so I'm really looking forward to that. 'I like the idea of head of recruitment, but you have to work your way up to that point- you can't just start where you want to you have to earn your stripes and I'm more than prepared to do that. I've got time to do that and learn the job properly so when I do finish I can be ready to go.' The City Football Group owns - either fully or partly - 13 football clubs across the world with Manchester City the stand out team. Le Fondre has previously played for one of their clubs having had a loan spell with Mumbai City in India during the 2020-21 season. He also had experience of playing in Australia's A-League having spent five years playing for Sydney FC.

‘OM has a place in my heart’ – Wesley Fofana on Marseille’s summer approach

Wesley Fofana (23) has revealed in an exclusive interview with Téléfoot that he was approached by Olympique de Marseille’s sporting advisor Medhi Benatia over the summer. There was some uncertainty about Fofana’s future at Chelsea as the club was beginning a new project with the departure of Mauricio Pochettino and the arrival of his successor Enzo Maresca. The centre-back had missed the entire 2023/24 campaign and there was no guarantee that Maresca would want to rely upon him. With that in mind, Marseille looked to test the waters for a defender who had been born in the city but had never made an appearance for the club. And Fofana reveals there was definitely a certain attraction to returning home to his city, as he states “We got a call from Mr. Benatia. And my heart went: boom boom.” However, a conversation with Maresca would put an end to Marseille’s pursuit of the defender. Fofana explains to the French broadcaster, “I didn’t know if I was going to be part of Chelsea’s project. But I had a talk with the coach. He told me he was counting on me this year. So I said, I was very happy and I was 100% with Chelsea.” Still, Fofana does not close the door fully on an eventual homecoming once his time at Chelsea has come to an end as he notes, “It’s true that Marseille has a place in my heart, [so] we’ll see.” GFFN | Nick Hartland

Rylee Foster: Former Liverpool ace reflects on her journey to the WSL

2025-03-12 23:43:56

"If you die and come back to life, you can overcome anything."Three years on from a car crash that left Foster and many others questioning whether she would walk again, the Canada-born shot-stopper is back playing at the highest level and is enjoying every second of it. "If you die and come back to life, you can overcome anything." Three years on from a car crash that left Foster and many others questioning whether she would walk again, the Canada-born shot-stopper is back playing at the highest level and is enjoying every second of it. The list of injuries suffered while holidaying in Finland back in 2021 was extensive. Neck fractures, lower-back breaks, a broken cheekbone, partial tears in the knee and shoulder, as well as brain damage. As expected, a lengthy rehabilitation phase followed with the main objective being to obtain a decent quality of life for the then 23-year-old. But she had other ideas. Speaking exclusively toSky Sports, Foster reflected on her journey back to the professional game after signing a short-term deal with Everton this summer. She said: "I am happy playing now. When you are out of the game, it is hard to find your identity again. The accident gave me opportunity but took away my biggest passion. You lose that love for the game, "For me to be back in the WSL, amongst the best of the best, I feel that love and desire. I'm being challenged and tested every day which is what I want. "That challenge is what I was craving. I have that here. Back in a league where anything can happen." 731 days after suffering life-threatening injuries, Foster was back between the sticks for A-League side Wellington Phoenix after being released by Liverpool at the end of her contract in 2022. "Business is business. I was an asset that could not perform which is the cruel reality of football," Foster said after being asked about her perception of Liverpool now. "At the end of the day, do I have hard feelings? No. I'm back in the city that I call home and my family is from. I have the opportunity to represent a club which is just as established and historical. "It is awesome. We are trying to grow the game; I have respect for both sides. I am honoured to be back playing." After making 19 appearances across all competitions in New Zealand, she set her sights on returning to the United Kingdom with a trial at Celtic. However, the road to finding a new club was not an easy one. After featuring in five pre-season games for Celtic, Foster was not offered a contract at the end of it due to a "misdiagnosed" knee problem. But as usual, this setback did not deter her as she pursued other trial opportunities before eventually signing for Everton. Foster had previously stated clubs had been hesitant to take the "risk" given the injury history, although any worries Everton boss Brian Sorensen had about signing the 26-year-old quickly dispersed after seeing her in action. "She had been out there playing consistently and was in the entire pre-season as a trialist," Sorensen toldSky Sports. "She did well and we saw no concerns in terms of her older accident, we saw her play fresh and looked sharp. "Rylee is a good character and comes with a lot of energy, so she is settling in really well." She is yet to make her debut for the Toffees as she competes with first-choice goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan and fellow understudy Emily Ramsey, but is not piling any pressure on herself and insists her "time will come" in blue. "For me it is about staying ready. We know who steps between the sticks, the job will get done," she added. "My objective is to keep asking questions and working hard. My time will come but I'm here and earning my stripes back. I was away for so long at the top level and can't expect to be playing every day. "It is realistic to say I'm here and taking my opportunities when they come. I'm still young, my time will come and it is not something I need to stress about." Her impressive mentality stems from the accident itself and the new-found freedom it has given her across all aspects of her life. While many players on a short-term deal would look at the lack of game-time as an issue, Foster instead chooses to remain grateful for the opportunity itself after coming so close to losing it all. She said: "One can argue that if you die and come back to life, you can kind of overcome anything. "That is one of the most uncontrollable factors is that most of us can't survive. I am untouchable and that is not an arrogance thing, it's mentality. "What I went through, I don't wish upon anyone, but I'm so thankful I had the opportunity to endure those things. "I will do whatever I can do to be back playing. I know what it is like to be told you won't play again at very young age. "I take my opportunities to make the best of it. Nothing phases me. When you die and come back, you smile because you can." Watch Everton Women vs Chelsea Women live on Sky Sports Football this Sunday from 6.30pm.

Boss pushes Marcelo back to bench after Brazil legend refuses his pre-sub tactic

REAL MADRID and Brazil legend Marcelo was stopped from coming on by his OWN MANAGER after appearing to argue with the coach's tactics. The five-time Champions League winner, 36, left the Bernabeu in 2022 after 15 hugely successful years in the Spanish capital. He joined Olympiacos for one season, before returning to his home country last year when he signed for boyhood club Fluminense. Marcelo has played 68 games for the Brazilian side - who sit 12th in the top flight. But he was denied another appearance on Saturday after an incredible touchline spat with manager Mano Menezes. The left-back was stripped and ready to come on in the 90th minute with Fluminense holding onto a 2-1 lead over Gremio. Marcelo was preparing to enter the fray as part of a double substitution which also included the introduction of Marquinhos - the winger on loan from Arsenal. But as Menezes gave Marcelo instructions on the sideline, the ex-Real Madrid man seemed to disagree with what he was being told. This led to the manager becoming furious, before he pushed Marcelo and told him to sit down again. Marcelo walked to the bench and pulled his bib back on. And he ended up watching his team concede a stoppage-time equaliser as Fluminense drew 2-2 with Gremio. Reacting to Marcelo's altercation with Menezes, journalist Tancredi Palmeri said: "I have never seen anything similar in elite football." While one fan replied: "Respect to the coach for not backing down!" Another added: "This is so disrespectful." And a third said: "As it should be, he’s not bigger than the coach or the club."

Guardiola laments injury issues for City after Spurs loss

Pep Guardiola conceded Manchester City are in a "difficult position" with injuries after their 2-1 EFL Cup defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday.Timo Werner and Pape Sarr did the damage in the first half of the fourth-round tie, though Matheus Nunes reduced the deficit on the stroke of half-time. Pep Guardiola conceded Manchester City are in a "difficult position" with injuries after their 2-1 EFL Cup defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday. Timo Werner and Pape Sarr did the damage in the first half of the fourth-round tie, though Matheus Nunes reduced the deficit on the stroke of half-time. That came after Manuel Akanji was forced to withdraw from the lineup through a warm-up injury, while Savinho left the pitch on a stretcher after the interval. Jack Grealish, Kyle Walker, Rodri, Jeremy Doku and Kevin De Bruyne are the other first-team options out injured, and Guardiola cut a concerned figure at the full-time whistle. "We are in a difficult position with the amount of players," the Man City boss told Sky Sports. "It is what it is. It is normal. The limit of players is there. "We will see on Thursday [for Savinho's injury]. Jack Grealish and Kyle Walker [have] no chance to play the next games." City hold a one-point lead over Liverpool at the Premier League summit before the champions visit Bournemouth on Saturday. Guardiola was, at least, encouraged by the performances of his youngsters, with James McAtee and Nico O'Reilly both starting at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. "Exceptional. The young players did well," he added. "They are so fast, and I am really pleased. "If you play a game that quickly, they attack quicker. Of course, in the second half, there were transitions. They could have finished the game. Guardiola opted to leave Erling Haaland on the bench throughout, suggesting it was not worth risking City's key talisman. "The plan was not to play today," Guardiola confirmed on Haaland. "We have not had much recovery, and it was a waste of energy."

Zirkzee & Man Utd: Why it WILL happen for the Dutchman - despite his doubters

2025-03-02 08:13:02

On paper, it reads like the critics are right. Ahead of United's Europa League tie at Fenerbahce on Thursday night, Zirkzee was already being written off - across Europe. From England, to Italy, to his native Holland, ex-players and ex-coaches were lining up to pull apart the former Bologna centre-forward. Too slow. No natural finishing ability. A lack of genuine quality. They were all having their pop at Zirkzee last week. It's even reaching the stage where the Dutchman is being urged to cut his losses and return to Serie A. Fabio Capello. Paolo di Canio. Ruud Gullit. They all stated going into the Fener tie that Zirkzee would be better off giving it all away in January and starting again elsewhere. And as we say, after United's 1-1 draw in Istanbul, on paper, Zirkzee's report card read as a confirmation for all that criticism. In a rare start, deployed as United's lone centre-forward, Zirkzee drew another blank. And within ten minutes of the second-half, he was hauled off by manager Erik ten Hag for direct striker rival Rasmus Hojlund. On paper, it didn't make good reading. But such black-and-white facts can prove deceptive. And anyone taking in Zirkzee's performance over those 55 minutes would recognise a player gradually adjusting to a new system and a new way of playing. His lay-off for Christian Eriksen's opener was notable. And he'll take confidence from that. But Zirkzee offered so much more on the night. It was still in fits and starts, but you can see what he's trying to do. And it will come together. For the moment, Zirkzee and Ten Hag - and his staff - are working on the player bridging that gap between the demands of Serie A and Premier League football. The speed of thought. The physical demands. The reactions. Everything is at a hyper level in England. More than a gap, there's a chasm between what is needed to be successful in Italy compared to 'the island'. Indeed, lamenting a poor week in Europe for Italy's clubs, Capello used Zirkzee's situation as an example of the current gulf between the leagues. “The point is intensity," said AC Milan's Champions League winning coach. "Our clubs are too slow in the Champions League because they are accustomed to the Serie A rhythm. “I asked (Bologna coach Vincenzo) Italiano what he thought about Aston Villa and Liverpool, and he said: ‘They are faster; they run more than we do.’ Look at Zirkzee in the Premier League and tell me if he looks like the same player we admired at Bologna. "He did what he wanted in Italy, but in England, it feels that he doesn’t even have time to think about what he has to do. More or less, the same thing happens to our clubs.” Capello is spot on. And it's why Zirkee deserves patience. His slow start isn't about ability. It's simply that the current step up from Italian to English football is something never before seen. The gap is wide - and continues to grow. But at Fener, you could see the potential. Earlier this season, this column likened Zirkzee's game to Eric Cantona. And even now, we stand by that. A drop of the shoulder to sink his marker in United's half. A clever-and-go with Marcus Rashford. Teeing up Eriksen for the Swede to drive home to give United the lead. It was all there. Indeed, for the way Zirkzee appears happier playing deeper off the line, you can see Ten Hag trying a pairing of the Dutchman and Hojlund in attack this season. There's no reason why this has to be a one or the other calculation for the manager. The pair's games can complement eachother. Yes, he's leggy. Yes, at times he does appear a yard off the pace. But as mentioned in previous columns, United's strength and conditioning staff are working with Zirkzee to get him physically equipped for Premier League football. It's speed of thought. But also speed of action. And Zirkzee's body isn't quite tuned to Premier League demands. But like his overall game, these improvements will come over time. Certainly, Jan van Halst believes so. The former Ajax sports chief, unlike so many of his peers, getting it right when assessing Zirkzee's situation last week. "It's just the little things," said Van Halst. "Just too late, just not explosive enough. He could be a bit sharper. And then he really becomes a fantastic player. "He is of course a fantastic player, who plays for Manchester United. And he had a fantastic year last year. Zirkzee is also technically very skilled." Correct. United do have a "fantastic player" on their hands. However he will need time, as Capello states, to adjust to the chasm that now separates English and Italian football. But it will happen. Sooner rather than later, Josh Zirkzee will grow into the player that convinced United to invest 35 million quid in over the summer.

Why Amorim can be 'legend' at MU after changing entire Portugal football culture

Cantinho do Sa has barely been open five minutes when the first punters of the day begin trickling through the door. It is just after 11.30am as the restaurant’s manager begins a frantic stock control check. It’s a matchday and even with the club’s Ultras boycotting the match - more on that later - footfall will be high and distractions aren’t an option. Signed boots hang delicately from the ceiling while signed shirts adorn the walls. A signed and framed photo of a young Cristiano Ronaldo gets pride of place on the wall next to the kitchen hatch. Everything about the place is green. The fabric on the bar stools, the table placemats, the pens staff use, and they have even picked Heineken to be the beer on draught to fit the green theme. Even the soup of the day (pea) is green. What they didn’t account for on Tuesday was that their eyes would be green, too. Green with envy. Jealous of the attention going to Manchester United and their well-documented pursuit of local hero Ruben Amorim. Mentions of United grated on staff at Cantinho so much that the restaurant manager ordered TVs to be muted while the same 35-second sequence of Amorim being quizzed on his future that morning played on a loop. Magazines with his face on are being bundled into a box by the window. Signs of Amorim are already coming down. ‘They don’t have money to fly Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo to Paris but somehow have 10million euros for Amorim?’ Hector, one of the lunchtime customers, remarks to Mail Sport. ‘He would be going to a house that is on fire.’ There is an irony that when Amorim arrives at the stadium, before he heads in, he can stand for a moment and watch cranes dance across the sky as large-scale building work outside gathers pace. He would be leaving one rebuild for another, perhaps one of the greatest in world football, with United devoid of structure, identity, personality and, most importantly, a winning culture. ‘He took on a very precarious club, one that was fragmented at the sides, and he gave it a structure and played a recognisable style,’ Fernando Coelho, News Now TV presenter, tells . ‘Supporters feel disappointed if he leaves because it’s not even November, they think it is too early. Manchester United is a bigger club than any in Portugal and offers financial reward… it’s a huge deal to coach in the Premier League. ‘It was a huge gamble by the president to hire Amorim. They asked him at the start “what if this goes wrong?” And he responded with, “well, what if this goes right?” He can give an identity to Man United.’ Fred Saeed, a Sporting season-ticket holder for the past decade, is begrudgingly pragmatic while those around him just north of the Campo Grande metro stop weep. Strangers are offering hugs to each other outside the ticket office. ‘I think he is a new generation of coach,’ he tells Mail Sport. ‘He is a breath of fresh air in a country where the football fanbase is quite toxic, to be honest. The way he speaks to fans, the way he talks, it’s always so smooth, so peaceful in a way. ‘In a way he innovated the tactics here in Portugal. Not a lot of teams used a back three and he started using that. A few teams have done it now, including the national team has done it now. No doubt he influenced that. His impact is not only on Sporting but on the whole national football. ‘It was amazing and honestly I believe he will do a great job at Manchester United. The structure there hasn’t been the most supportive so let’s wait to see what happens.’ Where resignation had set in for Fred, the opposite had happened to Andre, who was drowning his sorrows next to the bifana (a traditional Portuguese pork sandwich) food trucks where fans congregated to unpack a day in which it was announced officially that United were prepared to pay Amorim’s release clause. Wound up by his Benfica-supporting friend Ruben, Andre explained how he took an emergency break at work upon hearing the news of Amorim's expected departure. ‘I wanted to cry,’ he said. ‘It feels wrong that he could leave now. Only yesterday he was talking about winning another title and now this? I don’t even care about this game, I just want to hear what Amorim has to say. I can only hope he stays.’ Amorim is convivial by nature and despite being hardened by his parents’ divorce when he was young, the 39-year-old’s day here took on an array of emotions that started and ended in chuckles and a wry smile. Everything in between was rather more sheepish and uncomfortable. One source close to the dressing room told Mail Sport that players were stunned that Amorim could leave them during the season, particularly after convincing many of his star names to shun interest from elsewhere in the summer and keep faith in his Sporting project. And yet before the night was out, Amorim was striking a somewhat unfamiliar chord. Stability isn’t the be-all-and-end-all. His word is his word - until it isn’t. ‘Stability is not everything in life,’ he mused. ‘We will have time to talk about that. I will explain what I have to explain. ‘Regarding my word, nothing prevents something from happening in the world of football. One thing does not prevent the other. The only time I broke my word was on the day of the plane (to West Ham). ‘I have maximum stability, I am very happy here. I really like my staff, one thing does not prevent the other. Let's see what happens in the future. There is an interested club. There is a clause, the intention to pay.’ Amorim describes his English as ‘rudimentary’ but that is not accurate. He is a master orator that, perhaps due to his age, is able to relate to players in a way that fosters a genuine togetherness. While there are similarities to be drawn to his idol Jose Mourinho, who he once shadowed as part of a coaching internship at United’s Carrington training base, they are also different, if not least tactically with Amorim a much more adventurous coach in that department. ‘Since Mourinho in 2000 there has not been a phenomenon like this,’ Portuguese football expert Pedro Boucas tells Mail Sport. ‘While they are very different, Amorim is a master in communication, tactics and leadership. The risk of losing at Manchester United is very high… but Amorim is on another level.’ Miguel Amaral, reporter for ZeroZero, agrees. ‘They are a sleeping giant and if Ruben can do a job in Manchester he will become a legend. He’s ready to make this jump.’ So the night itself, a will-he-won’t-he take the game to-do that eventually saw him emerge from the bunker of the training ground, where he had been holed up since 10.05am, under the cloud of an official statement that Manchester United intend to pay his £8.3m release clause. As Sporting’s social media team filmed the arrival of the team coach, they glossed over - or at least tried to - Amorim and did their very best to hide him. Arrival photos also left the manager out. Children waited right up against the barrier at the VIP entrance with handmade ‘FICA RUBEN’ signs (‘Stay Ruben’). Nobody seemed to remember - or care - about the cup quarter-final ahead. Whispers swirled and fans became increasingly restless as they slumped in the stands glued to their social media feeds waiting for another devastating announcement. In the end one never came. Ultras boycotted this League Cup match, over the Portuguese FA's desire to host the final-four stage abroad, potentially in Saudi Arabia. If this was it for Amorim, there would be no proper send-off for the man who took a dysfunctional Sporting and propelled them into powerhouse status. When Amorim stepped out into his technical area many rose to their feet, gritting their teeth amid their anger and feeling of betrayal and focusing on the positives for which he has given them. Whistles and jeers were definitely in the minority. When the match began it was aggressive, front-footed, a suffocating press that has been blatantly absent from the final days of the Erik ten Hag era. Were it not for some dreadful officiating Sporting, led impressively by Englishman Marcus Edwards, would have had a pair of penalties in the opening half-hour and taken control. In the end it was a second-half flurry, two goals from Viktor Gyokores, one of which was the first direct free-kick Sporting have scored in almost four years, and Amorim’s team had won again. A hug with his counterpart and down the tunnel he went. No grand farewell. No tears. It is his de facto response at the end of games, many fans were quick to point out. But after such a close bond between players and manager, surely they deserved more than this if it was to be a painful goodbye? It was a strange occasion on a farcical night in which nobody cared about the football. Never have so many people cared about the post-match thoughts of a manager. For all his charisma and cheeky smile, Amorim’s patience wore thin when pressed on when United fans could expect to see him in England. ‘It's my decision. If I want to go or not, I'll make that decision later,’ he said, confirming he would take training as normal on Wednesday. ‘Without a doubt my players will be disappointed with me if I leave, but that's part of life. That happened in Braga, when I came. That happened a bit, because they were disappointed. There are things that change people's lives. It's a difficult situation. I'm not going to say whether I want to go or not.’ And off he went. Into the night with fans in both Manchester and Lisbon facing a sleepless night. Mourinho may well have loved being the orchestrator of such high-octane drama but for Amorim it appeared to be weighing heavy. Fans forgave him after his embarrassing trip to London to flirt with West Ham and if he shuns United they may well forgive him again. But deep down he knows, and they know, this is a job he has to take.

Who could Real Madrid sign at right-back? Porro a potential TAA alternative

2025-03-25 12:50:37

Although Trent Alexander-Arnold is Real Madrid’s first-choice target, Tottenham’s Pedro Porro has emerged as an increasingly attractive back-up option. As Real Madrid step up plans to bring in a new right-back, the LaLiga giants are keeping close tabs on Tottenham Hotspur’s Pedro Porro, a player who has been the subject of long-term interest from the Spanish and European champions. Porro impressing Real Madrid scouts in Premier League Back in January 2023, before Porro left Sporting CP for Tottenham, AS reported that Madrid were eyeing a move for the Spanish international. Now, with Dani Carvajal’s serious knee injury prompting Los Blancos to intensify their pursuit of a right-back, Porro remains firmly on the club’s radar. Although Liverpool Trent Alexander-Arnold is Madrid’s chief target, Porro is among the alternatives viewed as the most attractive. Since he arrived in the Premier League, indeed, Madrid’s scouting reports on the 25-year-old have been increasingly glowing. Madrid are impressed by the progress Porro has made in the English top flight, where he has matured as a player as he deals with some of the most dangerous wingers on the planet. His development has also been aided by Tottenham’s appointment of Ange Postecoglou as head coach. Having played as a highly attack-minded right wing-back both at Sporting and in his first six months at Spurs, Porro now operates as a full-back in Postecoglou’s 4-4-2 formation. While the Spaniard remains a player who doesn’t need a second invitation to join in the attack, his positional switch has helped to polish his defensive capabilities. How much would Porro cost to sign? However, prising Porro from Tottenham’s clutches would not be a straightforward proposition for Madrid. After an initial €5 million loan, Spurs paid a further €40 million to make the move permanent. A fixture in the North Londoners’ team, his market worth has steadily grown at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The specialist website Transfermarkt valued him at €25 million when he joined Spurs, and now prices him at the €45 million he cost the Premier League club. Porro has amassed 64 appearances for Tottenham, scoring eight goals and providing ten assists. Ever-present in the Premier League this season, his performances have earned him a recall to the Spain squad, with national coach Luis de la Fuente starting him in both of La Roja’s games in the October international week. With all this in mind, Tottenham can be expected to drive a hard bargain for a player who remains under contract until 2028.If Madrid decide to swoop for the defender, they will have to dig deep. TAA remains Real Madrid’s priority option Before making any moves for Porro, however,Madrid will first try to sign Alexander-Arnold, who is out of contract at the end of the seasonand is stalling on signing a new deal at Anfield. As things stand, the 26-year-old will be free to negotiate a summer free transfer to a non-English club from January 1, 2025. Should Madrid’s pursuit of Alexander-Arnold fall through, though, Porro has emerged as an ever likelier back-up candidate, alongside other potential options such as Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.

Juventus coach Motta demands more from attack after Parma draw

Enrico del Prato and Simon Sohn struck in the first-half for Parma, with Weston McKennie and Timothy Weah both finding equalisers for Juve. Afterwards, Motta sought to focus on the positives. A judgment on the match? "We want to do a lot and sometimes we can't do what we have in mind. We have to keep our balance, play with our idea, against a team that closes up and today they restarted very well with their wingers. We suffered, we went into their half of the field, they made a low block and with our errors in the final meters they restarted. "We have to try to build forward and at the first mistake you have to take 60/70 metres back it gives a psychological advantage to the opponent. We have to do the counter-pressing immediately, otherwise they run away and go towards our goal. It means giving an advantage to the opponent." What didn't work? On the Gatti-Danilo duo? "During the whole match we have to bring balance to the game in the opponent's half. We often committed in the final meters and we allowed Parma to restart. Physically and psychologically we gave the opponents an advantage. On Danilo-Gatti? I looked at the team, not just them. As a team we did well and badly at times." Did you expect more from your team? "Tonight we wanted a different result, because we know we can do better. Today we didn't do what was necessary to win. We need to leave this game behind and recover our energy to face Udinese at our best." The draws are starting to become many... Today the draw is not what we wanted. This evening we did not do enough to win it, now in three days we have another match, we have to recover our players to go and make a great performance in Udine." Did you expect more from Vlahovic? "I expect more in the offensive phase from everyone, not just Vlahovic. In the offensive phase we could have done better. I focus a lot on our collective, that's the key to doing more. We have to do better especially in the final pass and putting the opponent in difficulty for as long as possible." On too many technical errors... "It's part of the game. We have very strong players who at times want to do too much and make mistakes. We have to do better and we certainly will, because we have very strong players." How is Koopmeiners? "Very good. We are very happy to have him with us. He has made a great effort, because he has to endure the pain."

13 players we can’t believe have been nominated for the Ballon d’Or

The Ballon d’Or recognises the best footballers in the world every year. But it’s difficult not to raise an eyebrow at some of the nominees over the years. Before 2024, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated the award’s shortlist for a decade and a half, while world-class stars like Karim Benzema, Robert Lewandowski and Kevin De Bruyne deserve their place in the voting year in, year out. But there are also some names it was easy to forget – or just can’t believe – were ever considered among the very best in the world. We’ve gone through previous shortlists to pick out more names which made us go ‘bloody hell’. Oh, Donny. Should’ve stayed at Ajax. Jamie Vardy was on the 2016 shortlist, justifiably so, of course, after a season in which he fired Leicester City to the title and also broke the record for goals in consecutive Premier League matches. But that doesn’t make his name any less striking looking back. We’re reasonably certain we don’t have to consult old copies of the Rothman’s annual to say he’s the only former Stocksbridge Park Steels player to get on the Ballon d’Or shortlist. We love Mario, the mad b*stard, but for all his undoubted ability and potential it doesn’t seem quite right to rank him among the best and most consistent talents in the world. He was, however, coming off the back of his eye-catching brace against Germany in the semi-finals of Euro 2012 – so this one should probably be dedicated to the Twitter banter which followed. Earning a whopping 0.22% of the vote, Nani was nominated off the back of his best season at Manchester United – and possibly of his career. The winger had been named the Players’ Player of the Year at the club, but two campaigns later he began to fall out of favour at Old Trafford. It was hard not to love Gyan after the 2010 World Cup, when he made us all quite heartbroken and confirmed the status of Luis Suarez as football’s pantomime villain, but he really should have been disqualified on the grounds that he was a striker who wore the No.3 shirt. It’s easy to forget that the striker who scored one goal in 15 matches for Crystal Palace in 2016 and was known to “sit in the weight room on a chair with a cup of coffee and a muffin”, according to Brede Hangeland, was on his day one of the most devastating forwards in world football. Adebayor scored 30 goals in all competitions for Arsenal in 2007-08 but only managed to pass the 15-goal mark twice since, once in the Premier League and the other time in Turkey. “Like Justin Fashanu, Squeeze, John Kerry and tubes of blue Smarties he promised much, was momentarily transcendent, but ultimately declined into familiar mediocrity,” The Guardian noted on Kanoute in 2007. The striker showed flashes of quality in England, but few expected him to outscore the likes of Samuel Eto’o, Fernando Torres and David Villa for Sevilla in 2006-07. It shouldn’t be forgotten that the 2005-06 season saw Lehmann set a Champions League record of 853 minutes without a goal and usurp Oliver Kahn as Germany’s No.1 for the World Cup. But it will always be remembered as the season that ended with Lehmann getting sent off after only 18 minutes of the Champions League final. A nomination based on his Champions League heroics for Liverpool, in which he scored winning goals against Juventus and Chelsea (sorry, Jose). But Garcia never reached those heights again and his career became somewhat nomadic after leaving Anfield two years later. Baros scored just two goals for Liverpool throughout the whole of the 2003-04 season but won the Golden Boot award at Euro 2004 as he hit the back of the net five times. Remember when Trabelsi was released by Manchester City after just one season? No? Exactly. David Beckham, Iker Casillas, Ryan Giggs, Paolo Maldini, Francesco Totti, David Trezeguet and Christian Vieri were among the players to receive a nomination but no votes for the 2002 Ballon d’Or award. Thanks to Senegal’s run to the quarter-finals of the World Cup, future Fulham stalwart Papa Bouba Diop and Jamie Carragher’s best mate Diouf received two votes each. An example for Chelsea youngsters: play well at Vitesse Arnhem and you could find yourself on the Ballon d’Or shortlist.

Vinicius suffered 'injustice' after Ballon d'or snub, says Brazil coach Dorival

Dorival Junior feels Vinicius Junior suffered an "injustice" by not winning the Ballon d'Or, as the Brazil head coach slammed the "unfair situation". The Real Madrid winger failed to scoop the accolade despite scoring 24 goals and providing 11 assists last season, as Los Blancos won a LaLiga and Champions League double. The club opted to skip the ceremony after hearing Vinicius Junior would miss out on the top award, which was won by Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri. Madrid's decision not to attend generated mixed reviews. City head coach Pep Guardiola empathised with Carlo Ancelotti's side, but LaLiga president Javier Tebas accused them of "exaggerated victimhood". Dorival acknowledges Rodri was deserving of the award, having helped City to an unprecedented fourth successive Premier League title before starring Spain's victorious Euro 2024 squad. However, the Selecao boss believes Vinicius has every right to feel aggrieved at missing out. "In my opinion, [it's] an unfair situation, especially because it is an individual award," Dorival told reporters during a press conference. "Nothing against whoever won the award, quite the opposite. It is the recognition of one of the great players of Spanish football, but Vinicius - for the work he did - should have received different attention. "But the greatest prize that Vinícius won was the recognition and respect of his people. The vast majority of the Brazilian people realised the injustice that was done to the player who could have deservedly received the award."

Barcelona expect goalkeeper target to cost in excess of €40m

2025-03-09 15:07:46

In the last six weeks, Barcelona have decided that signing a new goalkeeper will be on the club’s agenda for next summer’s transfer window. Marc-Andre Ter Stegen will still be counted on upon his return from a serious knee injury, although the idea will be to slowly phase him out over the coming years. FC Porto and Portuguese national team ‘keeper Diogo Costa is believed to be Barcelona’s leading target at this stage, although the club are also interested in Lille’s Lucas Chevalier, who has been tipped to be France’s number one in the future. The 22-year-old, who kept a clean sheet against Real Madrid earlier this season, is very highly-rated across Europe. It won’t be easy for Barcelona to sign him in 2025, as Sport say that Lille’s asking price would be in excess of €40m – for a ‘keeper, this is considered to be a very significant amount. It remains to be seen how Barcelona sporting director Deco approaches the situation ahead of the transfer market opening next summer. He has a big job on his hands to decide the best target, and Chevalier should feature prominently in his thoughts.

Amorim should SACK Van Nistelrooy in his bid to fix 's***show' at Man United

2025-03-20 06:08:35

Troy Deeney has urged Ruben Amorim to brutally sack Ruud van Nistelrooy in order to begin fixing the 's***show' at Manchester United.Amorim was officially announced as the Red Devils' new head coach yesterday but will take charge at Old Trafford on November 11, allowing him to oversee Sporting Lisbon's next two matches. He has signed a contract until June 2027. Troy Deeney has urged Ruben Amorim to brutally sack Ruud van Nistelrooy in order to begin fixing the 's***show' at Manchester United. Amorim was officially announced as the Red Devils' new head coach yesterday but will take charge at Old Trafford on November 11, allowing him to oversee Sporting Lisbon's next two matches. He has signed a contract until June 2027. Van Nistelrooy was temporarily handed the reins by United after Erik ten Hag's dismissal and he will remain in post for the next three fixtures, having already steered his side to a thumping victory against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup. It is understood that Amorim will look to bring several of his trusted coaches from Sporting and Van Nistelrooy's long-term future is uncertain as a result. But Deeney believes the 39-year-old must rip up the backroom team and surround himself with his own staff when he arrives during the international break. Writing for The Sun, Deeney said: 'The person who will come out of this the best? Ruud. He will have a nice pay packet. 'His stock will rise and he won't be tarnished with Ten Hag's tenure. 'Even if United lose 7-0 to Chelsea, Ruud can say: "It's not my fault. The players were distracted by Ten Hag going and the new manager." 'My one bit of advice to Ruben? 'Don't keep Ruud on. You want to clear the decks once you are there, with only your people around you. 'Only then can you figure out what the problems are - and how to solve them.' Deeney has also warned Amorim that he will face a stark challenge at United, particularly over the squad's current fitness levels and suitability for his tactics. He added: 'He has a heck of a job. https://img.allfootballapp.com/www/M00/5A/05/720x-/-/-/CgAGVmcmGp-ARC1aAACVFEHCTYU003.jpg 'I am not saying these United boys are not fit but they will be nowhere near fit enough for Amorim. His Sporting teams run their arses off. 'There are going to be a lot of ups and downs between now and January 1 and then - oh my God - is he going to have to come out with a broom and sweep the lot. 'If you're walking into that s***show with that ball of yarn to untangle, where do you begin? Good luck with that, Ruben.'

Ruben Amorim verdict delivered by former Man United star Nani

2025-03-07 20:41:49

Nani has delivered his assessment of Ruben Amorim as the Sporting Lisbon boss prepares to follow his path from the Portuguese giants to Manchester United.Amorim was officially announced as Man United's new head coach on Friday, with the 39-year-old old taking up the position during the international break on November 11. Nani has delivered his assessment of Ruben Amorim as the Sporting Lisbon boss prepares to follow his path from the Portuguese giants to Manchester United. Amorim was officially announced as Man United's new head coach on Friday, with the 39-year-old old taking up the position during the international break on November 11. The confirmation came after a week of negotiations between the two clubs, as Man United acted quickly after sacking manager Erik ten Hag. As part of the agreement Amorim would remain in charge of three final Sporting matches, including crucial clashes with Man City in the Champions League and Braga in the Portuguese top flight. The first match came on Friday night with Sporting earning a dominant 5-1 win over Estrela Amadora, whose team featured former Man United star Nani. Nani, now 37, has offered his backing for Amorim to achieve success at Man United after praising his 'excellent job' at Sporting. ‘All I can say is good luck,' Nani told Sport TV. ‘He has done an excellent job at Sporting, and I hope he can do the same at United, which is a great club, one of the best clubs in the world. ‘I think he is in a great place; he will have the chance with excellent players to deliver a strong response, as he has all the conditions to do so.’ Nani received an ovation from the Sporting fans when he came on as a second half substitute for Estrela, his hometown club. The winger had come through Sporting's academy and played 136 times for the first team, scoring 31 goals, before moving to Man United for a reported £21m fee in 2007. Nani joined United in 2007 from Sporting Lisbon and went on to spend eight years at Old Trafford. During this time he won four Premier League titles, two League Cups, the Champions League and the Club World Cup. After leaving United in 2015, he had spells at Fenerbahce, Valencia and Lazio before moving to the US to play for Orlando City. A return to Italy followed as he joined Venezia prior to transfers to Melbourne Victory and Adana Demirspor. Amorim will make the same move as Nani from Sporting to Man United and the pair were seen in a warm embrace on the touchline following Friday's match. Former Man United defender Rio Ferdinand revealed earlier this week that Nani had also given him more insight on Amorim. 'I spoke to Nani actually the other day and he said "Rio, whatever you want to talk about, tactics or whatever, the players play for him, they love him and they respect him",' Ferdinand said in a video posted on X. 'One of the issues I think with Erik ten Hag and what he [Nani] said about Amorim is he's very straight, very straight and very direct. 'From what I'm hearing, I'm talking to people that have played for [him] but also been around [him] as a human, I think the character and the charisma compared to Erik ten Hag will be the big differentiator, will be the big difference.' Amorim, who has signed a two-and-a-half year deal at Man United, admitted post match that over the course of three days he was left to make what he feels is the biggest decision of his career to date. 'I was told it was now or never. I had three days to make my mind up,' he said. 'A decision that would radically change my life. I've had other opportunities. The president and [Hugo] Viana can confirm this. This is not the first or second time I have been requested. 'After Sporting, I wanted Manchester. There's a time I have to take a step forward. It was hard. I had to do this. 'I don't want to victimise myself. The only one in no-man's land was me. I didn't say it before because it had to be agreed between the clubs.'

Man United PLAYER RATINGS: Which Ten Hag signing sent a message to his critics?

2025-03-21 20:01:43

Manchester United enjoyed a blistering start to the post-Erik ten Hag era with a barnstorming 5-2 win against Leicester City to confirm their spot in the final eight of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening. Manchester United enjoyed a blistering start to the post-Erik ten Hag era with a barnstorming 5-2 win against Leicester City to confirm their spot in the final eight of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening. Under interim head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, the hosts ran rampant against their Premier League opposition in the first tie since a sobering 2-1 defeat against West Ham on Sunday. Ten Hag signing Casemiro opened the scoring after just 15 minutes, before Alejandro Garnacho doubled the Red Devils' lead inside the first half an hour. Although the Foxes were able to pinch one back four minutes later via Bilal Al Khannouss and Conor Coady sought to launch a second-half comeback, goals from Bruno Fernandes and a second from Casemiro capped a decisive victory at Old Trafford. Here, Mail Sport's Nathan Salt runs the rule over whose star shone the brightest - and which players still have some way to go. Altay Bayindir - 6.5 Was beaten at full stretch by Bilal El Khannous and then was left exposed by his defenders as Conor Coady lashed in from a few yards out to make it 4-2. Did make a spectacular save tipping onto the bar a vicious effort from Boubakary Soumare. Lisandro Martinez - 7 Again operating at left back, the Argentine provides a calming presence there where others have looked erratic and more uncomfortable. The biggest drawback is he has limited output going forward which leaves United a touch one-sided when attacking. Victor Lindelof - 6 Was the centre back targeted by Leicester striker Jordan Ayew and the forward did get some change out of Lindelof. Matthjis de Ligt - 6.5 Always wants to dominate in the air and he will endear himself to his next manager with his bravery and unwavering belief he can win every header. Made some really smart passes through the lines into midfield but he’ll be as disappointed as anyone to have coughed up two cheap goals. Diogo Dalot - 6 Put his horror miss at West Ham behind him to get an assist when teeing up Alejandro Garnacho. Can count himself unlucky that Casemiro’s backward header inside his own box struck Dalot and was at the feet of Coady to score before he could react. Manuel Ugarte - 6.5 One of the changes made by Ruud van Nistelrooy and he looked assured, if less effective than he was in the battling display away to Fenerbahce recently. Taking steps in the right direction after that really worrying performance here against Tottenham. Casemiro - 8.5 Produced a stunning goal from 30 yards to build on his strong display at West Ham, before playing the key pass to Diogo Dalot to set up the second goal. Added a second goal of his own after some penalty box pin-ball thanks to his header striking both posts. Three goals in a week sends a message to his critics. Alejandro Garnacho - 7.5 Fresh off his trip to the Ballon d’Or awards he found the net after struggling so badly in front of it at West Ham in what was Ten Hag’s final match. Deserves credit too as it was his brilliant bit of trickery to win the free-kick for the Fernandes goal. If he can find some efficiency in front of goal he’ll be an even bigger problem for opponents than he already is. Bruno Fernandes - 8 He has to wait until late October for his first goal of the season… and then two come along at once. His first was a stroke of luck after a free-kick was diverted in via the head of James Justin. His second was a genius piece of skill to sit Danny Ward down, go round him and still take his time before lashing in from a yard out. Marcus Rashford - 7 Has quietly been one of United’s more effective performers in the final weeks of the Ten Hag era, but much is made of what he isn’t doing rather than what he is. It was his cross for Casemiro that eventually wound up in the net for 4-1. Joshua Zirkzee - 5.5 On a night where Leicester were all at sea defensively, Zirkzee again couldn’t profit despite an early chance when through one-on-one. Nights like these are when he needs to build his confidence and yet again the chance to do so went awry. MANAGER: Ruud van Nistelrooy - 8 The perfect night? Not quite given they gave up two goals but it was damn near close. He managed to get United scoring and put on a show. Who knows how many more times he’ll stroll the touchline as United boss but one thing is certain, this is a night that will live long in the memory. SUBS Noussair Mazraoui (for Lisandro Martinez, 62) - 6.5 Got smacked in the face by a Bruno Fernandes effort but outside of that he came in and kept the pressure on down the left side on a Leicester team that looked every bit as disjointed as their nine changes suggested. Amad Diallo (for Marcus Rashford, 63) - 7 Almost produced a wonder-goal with an overhead kick inside the area. Got warm applause from Ruud van Nistelrooy but it was, unfortunately for the Ivorian, the wrong side of the post. Was bright for the half-hour he was handed here. Jonny Evans (for Matthjis de Ligt, 72) Rasmus Hojlund (for Alejandro Garnacho, 73) Leicester City: Ward 6, Justin 4, Coady 6, Okoli 4 (Vestergaard 71), Thomas 5, El Khannouss 7 (Alves 71), Skipp 6, Soumaré 5, McAteer 5 (Mavididi 72), De Cordova-Reid 6.5 (Buonanotte 71), Ayew 6 (Edouard 72) Manager: Steve Cooper 5

Liverpool transfers: Bryan Mbeumo and Antoine Semenyo scouted by club

Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo and Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo are among the players being scouted by Liverpool as they assess future targets that could play for Arne Slot.Under the new stewardship of Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes, Liverpool's recruitment group are working hard on assessing future talent, especially in areas of the team that may need replacements within the next 12 months. Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo and Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo are among the players being scouted by Liverpool as they assess future targets that could play for Arne Slot. Under the new stewardship of Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes, Liverpool's recruitment group are working hard on assessing future talent, especially in areas of the team that may need replacements within the next 12 months. Mohamed Salah is currently one of three top stars out of contract at the end of the season along with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold - and, although there is no definitive indication on any of their futures yet, Liverpool are doing the prudent thing and planning for varying outcomes. That may see a need to sign a new forward player and Semenyo is known to Hughes having signed him for Bournemouth from Bristol City in 2023. The 24-year-old has improved significantly on the south coast, especially since the arrival of Andoni Iraola as head coach, scoring five times in his last 14 appearances in the Premier League last season, and he has continued in that vein this season with three goals in nine. Mbuemo, 25, has been even more prolific with eight Premier League goals in nine, and he is understood to have been monitored by Liverpool for some time. Both players' profiles provide similarities to Salah, particularly their ability to be dangerous anywhere across the front positions. Sky Germanyhave reported Stuttgart's 25-year-old Egypt forward Oumar Marmoush is another player being looked at by Liverpool - but sources on Merseyside have refuted that he is of any interest to the club at this time. Head coach Slot once again gave nothing away on Friday when asked for an update on the contract situations surrounding Salah, Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk, stating that talks between the club and the trio are "ongoing". "For me the contract situation could become a problem if the players don't perform as well as they do at the moment," Slot said. "Of course, it's not sure that, if they perform not as good anymore, it has anything to do with their contract situation. "At the moment all three of them are in a good place, all of them perform really, really, really well and there are ongoing discussions, as Virgil said, with the people he has to talk with, and that's not me as you know. I talk with him to him about other things. "Let's wait and see but all what he said is completely right in that he doesn't exactly know what the future will be as long as he doesn't sign the contract yet."

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone joins growing discontent against La Liga

In the last 24 hours, a number of notable figures across Spanish football have criticised La Liga’s decision to go ahead with the MD12 fixture schedule, in the wake of the devastating Storm Dana that struck the Valencia community earlier this week. In the last 24 hours, a number of notable figures across Spanish football have criticised La Liga’s decision to go ahead with the MD12 fixture schedule, in the wake of the devastating Storm Dana that struck the Valencia community earlier this week. Valencia-Real Madrid and Villarreal-Rayo Vallecano were both postponed, although the other eight matches are on. Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick also gave his opinion that football should not be on this weekend, and this sentiment has been echoed by Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone, who expressed his views during his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s match against Las Palmas, as per Diario AS. “It doesn’t make any sense. What is happening is something very hard. It’s great to see the people who went out to the streets to help, who with a shovel and their equipment try to collaborate and that speaks very well of the country, of the people and we want to help wherever we can. There are people having a very bad time, it is very sad and they tell us to continue and here we are, continuing.” There’s certainly been a lot of angst aimed at La Liga over this matter, but for now, nothing has changed. It means that Simeone is still looking to snap Atletico Madrid’s poor recent form on Sunday.

Newcastle vs Chelsea: Alexander Isak strikes as Toon keep trophy dream alive

2025-03-03 17:40:17

Newcastle kept their dream of ending their long wait for a trophy alive as they beat Chelsea 2-0 to reach the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.Alexandar Isak and an Axel Disasi own goal within three first-half minutes did the damage in the last-16 tie at St James's Park. Newcastle kept their dream of ending their long wait for a trophy alive as they beat Chelsea 2-0 to reach the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. Alexandar Isak and an Axel Disasi own goal within three first-half minutes did the damage in the last-16 tie at St James's Park. Newcastle were beaten in the final of this competition in 2023, but now their hope of a first trophy since 1969 is one step closer. For Chelsea - who made 11 changes again for a cup competition after they had beaten Newcastle in the Premier League at the weekend - it is the first major setback of the season under Enzo Maresca. Newcastle start fast to power past Blues Chelsea were very much the architects of their own downfall in the first half as they fell two goals behind, constantly falling victim to Newcastle's press, losing the ball deep in their own territory and allowing the Magpies to capitalise. The opener was scored by Isak, as Joelinton hounded down possession before Sandro Tonali picked out the striker to finish. The second a Disasi own goal, as he sliced an attempted clearance into his own net after Willock had flicked on. Enzo Maresca was a little slow to react to try and get his side back into the game. Noni Madueke came on after the hour, but he wasn't in a rush otherwise to dip onto his bench. But Joao Felix should have got Chelsea back into the game on 75 minutes, as he raced in behind onto a long ball, but then dinked just wide of Nick Pope's post. What's next? Newcastle are back in Premier League action on Saturday at home to Arsenal at 12.30pm. Chelsea head to Manchester United on Super Sunday at 4.30pm - live on Sky Sports Premier League.

Arsenal deserved to lose against Newcastle, says Arteta

2025-03-30 17:04:18

Mikel Arteta was left frustrated by Arsenal's performance in their 1-0 defeat away to Newcastle United on Saturday. The defeat left them third in the Premier League, though they could be up to eight points behind Manchester City by the end of the day. Mikel Arteta was left frustrated by Arsenal's performance in their 1-0 defeat away to Newcastle United on Saturday. The defeat left them third in the Premier League, though they could be up to eight points behind Manchester City by the end of the day. Arsenal had 63.9% possession and mustered more shots (10) and a higher expected goals total (1.11) than Newcastle, but could not find a leveller following Alexander Isak's early header. And Arteta was disappointed with how his side did the basics following what he thought was a good start. "We deserved to lose today. I thought we started really well and were really dominant. We didn't defend the box well enough," he told Premier League Productions. "Credit to them. They scored a great goal with a good ball. "Then the game changes and you start to play a different game. You have to adapt and we didn't do that well enough. I am very frustrated. "We got dragged into a game they are looking for constantly and we couldn't play the game that we wanted." Arsenal only managed one shot on target in the match, coming from a Mikel Merino effort that was cleared off the line in the first half. Declan Rice, meanwhile, put a close-range header wide in second-half stoppage time. "We had two big chances: Mikel had a big one, Declan had a big one. We lacked answers," said Arteta. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, meanwhile, was delighted with the Magpies' performance as they sealed back-to-back victories following their win over Chelsea in the EFL Cup on Wednesday. "You have to be really strong mentality and know results will turn if you continue to do the right things," Howe told BBC Sport. "It has been a difficult week with the fixtures, but the players have done really well. "There was a better feeling in training after the Chelsea win, as if pressure lifted slightly. "Today's performance was built on hard work, desire and a lot of really good defending in the second half. I thought we looked good." Isak headed home from a pinpoint Anthony Gordon cross to tally up his third goal in three successive appearances in all competitions. "I wouldn't say it is a trademark goal for Alex but really pleased to see it. Anthony can give you that on his natural right-hand side and it was a great ball," said Howe. "It was always going to take a moment like that as it was a game of few chances."

Sir Alex Ferguson makes key decision over £24m business

Legendary Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has resigned as the director of his personal company. His business, ACF Sports Promotions Ltd, has accumulated £24.3m in assets and investments. Legendary Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has resigned as the director of his personal company. His business, ACF Sports Promotions Ltd, has accumulated £24.3m in assets and investments. Some of those assets include a sporting memorabilia collection estimated to be worth over £2m which is on display in various museums and universities. The business also has a £19m investment portfolio and cash reserves of £5.1m. Ferguson had launched the company in 1983 when he was manager of Aberdeen, three years before he would go on to start his 26-year Man United reign. His wife Lady Cathy had also served as a director until her death last year. Latest filings to Companies House have revealed Ferguson resigned as a director on October 29. His sons Jason and Darren, who manages Peterborough United, had resigned one day earlier. Mark Ferguson, however, remains a director having been appointed to the company with his brothers back in November 2012. Jason, Darren and Mark are all listed as being persons with significant control, with the three brothers having shares of 'more than 25% but not more than 50%;. 'The changes in how the company is run all point to Sir Alex starting to slow down and take a back seat in regards to his business dealings,' the Mirror quoted an insider as saying. 'And who can blame him as he approaches his mid-80s. The company is in rude health and in the very safe hands of his sons.' Ferguson's decision to step down as a director comes just weeks after the legendary Man United boss was axed as a club ambassador by Ineos. Ferguson, who won 38 trophies in 26 years, signed a deal following his retirement in 2013 to continue as a global club ambassador and director. In 2014 accounts United said Ferguson, 82, was paid £2.16m for his services. His multi-million pound ambassadorial role was ended by the club’s new part owner INEOS, as part of a wide-ranging cost-cutting programme. The move split opinions, with several prominent former Man United players hitting out at the decision.

Amorim press conference in full: New Man Utd manager gives very honest answers

2025-03-26 22:35:35

RUBEN AMORIM held his first press conference since being confirmed as the new Manchester United manager on Friday night.Strangely, though, that came after his current side Sporting smashed Estrela Amadora 5-1. RUBEN AMORIM held his first press conference since being confirmed as the new Manchester United manager on Friday night. Strangely, though, that came after his current side Sporting smashed Estrela Amadora 5-1. Amorim will take charge of two more matches as head coach in Portugal - against Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday and then his final game against former club Braga next Sunday. Then Amorim officially replaces Erik ten Hag as the new permanent Red Devils boss on November 11 after United stumped up £9.2million to get him out of his Sporting contract. And following Friday's announcement of his imminent arrival at Old Trafford, Amorim was quizzed on his new job. That included giving a host of very honest answers, including his January transfer plans. Here's what Amorim had to say... ON THE ANNOUNCEMENT “It was a very unusual week. “Obviously, since this whole situation came about I've felt different. I understand the anger of some fans and the disappointment. But that's life. I was moved by the ovation and that's how it is. "Even the other statement, when it came out, was on a match day. But clubs are now listed companies and they have to present all these things. FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS "There were two statements. But that's how things are, there are things that we can't control. " ON SPORTING FANS' REACTION “I'm very grateful to the fans and to everything here. People think I wanted to leave straight away. "In the next home game, whether we win or lose by 15-0, I'll be there to see what the fans want to give me. "I understand their anger, but we move on and time heals everything. It was the best period of my life." ON DECIDING THIS WAS HIS FINAL SEASON AT SPORTING "At the beginning of the season, and the chairman is there to confirm it, I had a conversation with him and director of football Hugo Viana. "I said that, whatever happened, it was my last season at Sporting. The president can confirm that. "The season started and we started to have a very good season. United came along, paid the clause, above the clause, and the chairman defended his interests. "I never discussed anything with the chairman." ON WANTING TO JOIN UNITED NEXT SUMMER "The only request I made to United was that it would be at the end of the season and they told me that wasn't possible, that it was now or never or Manchester would go for another option. "So I had three days to decide on something that would radically change my life." ON OTHER OFFERS "It's not the first time that I've been requested and had my clause paid by another club. Nor the second. It's very hard for me to leave. "I don't want another team. "After Sporting I wanted that one, Manchester, and I want that context because that context allows me to do things my way and the club believes me that way. "There's a time when I have to take a step forward in my career. That's what happened. "It was harder for me than for any Sporting fan, believe me, but I had to do this." ON DIFFICULT DECISION "There was no confusion at all. We have to safeguard everyone's interests. "Far from playing the victim, I'm sorry. "I said I would stay for as many games as necessary. I didn't say anything earlier because I couldn't. That's how the decision is. "The club knew that if I rejected it, I wouldn't have it in six months. And I knew that in six months I would know that I wouldn't be at Sporting. "The only club that I wanted and that moved me was United. It got to a point where I had to decide and I did. "Now I'm going home much more relaxed because I have explained. "People say 'it's about the money', but there was another team that wanted to hire me before and they paid three times more than Manchester." ON THREE MORE GAMES AT SPORTING AFTER ANNOUNCEMENT "I have to do what Sporting decides. I prefer it that way. "I don't leave the players in the lurch. "Against Nacional, I felt they were more anxious because I felt they didn't know what to expect. "I'm happy to stay and I won't leave my players in the lurch." ON SPEAKING TO ANY UNITED PLAYERS "As for United, I haven't spoken to anyone, not even the players. "I'm totally focused. "On the 11th we will have the opportunity to talk about Manchester United. At the moment I am at Sporting. "I wanted to explain all this to Sporting fans. The focus now is on Sporting. Then we will talk about Manchester United. "I changed my mind several times. My concern is not to harm the Sporting team, we'll see later. I'll have that concern when I'm at United." ON JANUARY SIGNINGS FROM SPORTING "Viktor Gyokeres costs 100m and it's very difficult. "I'm not going to get any players from Sporting in January. "I will take my staff with me. That was always one of my conditions. I brought them with me since Casa Pia. "What does it mean to me? It was the best period of my life. Everyone at Sporting knows how important it was to me. "I understand the disappointment of the fans and that leaving in the middle of a season that could be historic. "But today is not the farewell, we still have two important games against City and Braga, to maintain our lead."

Tebas slams Madrid's 'exaggerated victimhood' after Ballon d'Or boycott

LaLiga president Javier Tebas has accused Real Madrid of "exaggerated victimhood" as he slammed the club's decision to boycott Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony. The club opted to skip the ceremony after hearing Vinicius Junior would miss out on the top award, which was won by Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri. The Brazil winger failed to scoop the accolade despite scoring 24 goals and providing 11 assists last season, as Los Blancos won a LaLiga and Champions League double. Madrid's decision not to attend sparked controversy, though City boss Pep Guardiola empathised with Carlo Ancelotti's side, insisting "it is up to them". However, it has not gone down well with LaLiga boss Tebas, who feels it went against the club's principles. "I am a Real Madrid fan. The most important values of this club are being a gentleman and shaking hands when you lose," he told l'Equipe. "I think Real Madrid lost that spirit a long time ago. They should have gone to the ceremony and not questioned France Football's system, which is transparent, with 100 journalists voting. "Real's victimhood is unnecessary and exaggerated. I don't know where they want to go."

Negotiations with both the 39-year-old and Sporting were positive -United’s proposal to trigger the coach’s €10 million ($10.85 million) release clausewas accepted by the Lisbon-based outfit on Wednesday. Talks continue to work out when Amorim can start work and who will form part of his coaching staff -Carlos FernandesandAdelio Candidoare his right-hand men in the Portuguese capital. Amorim expected at Old Trafford after the November international break What is clear is thatAmorim’s appointment won’t be immediate. Sporting, who sit top of the Primeira Liga table on 27 points, have three games to play before the next international break and it appears that he will remain in the post until then, giving his employers time to find a replacement. SportingentertainEstrelaat home this Friday, then play away at Amorim’s old clubBragathe following Sunday. But the big game comes a few days later on 5 November when they meetManchester Cityin the fourth matchday of the Champions League. Sporting are unbeaten so far in Europe - wins against Lille and Sturm Graz and a draw against PSV leaves them eighth in the table and well placed for direct qualification to the next round. The next international break, the final one of this year runs from11-19 November, so Amorim will likely complete his move to Manchester after that. Amorimreplaced Silas as coach at Sporting in March 2020. He has overseen269 gameswith theLeões,winning 195 of them which gives him a very respectablewin rate of 72.49 percent. In such a short space of time, he has guided the team totwo league titlesandtwo league cups(Taças da Liga). As for his coaching style, the goods news is thatAmorim is an advocate of vibrant, attacking footballand his teams generally love scoring lots of goals. In 2020/21,Sporting finished with 86and conceded just 22 . That will come as comforting news at Old Trafford right now as under Ten Hag, the team havethe third worst goal scoring figures in the entire league- just eight goals to date - only Crystal Palace and bottom-placed Southampton have less, both with six.

Many fans dream of a reunion of the iconic MSN trio—Messi, Suárez, and Neymar—at Inter Miami, though this prospect is currently far-fetched, almost a fantasy. Neymar’s immediate focus is recovering fully from his injury. “He’s only thinking about his return to the field,” he told AS. Whilehe hasn’t yet decided on his next career move, the world is watching closely. There’s a sense thatNeymar and Inter Miami are destined to cross paths. DavidBeckham even stoked rumoursa few months ago by posting a photo of himself dining with Neymar. “Welcome to Miami, friend (just for dinner),” the Englishman joked onInstagram. However, several hurdles would need to be clearedbefore a reunion of the MSN trio could happen. Neymar’s Transfer Depends on MLS Sources inside Chase Stadium are clear: for Neymar to join Inter Miami, MLS must relax its salary cap rules. The team’s financial situation is the main challenge. Last January, the club had to scramble to register Luis Suárez, with as many as seven players leaving at the last moment to balance the books, including Designated Player and star Josef Martínez. Since Don Garber became league commissioner, several stars have joined MLS, yet despite his efforts tomake the league a stepping stone to Europe, it remains reliant on big-name veterans. These stars can help attract younger talent who dream of playing alongside their idols before heading to Europe. ASreached out to MLS, butthe league could not confirm whether new financial measures or a fourth Designated Player(DP) slot would be introduced. Inter Miami also stated that, for now, there has been no movement on Neymar. A signing likeNeymar would benefit everyone, especially with the 2026 World Cup approaching, where Ronaldinho is set to serve as an ambassador.Neymar has previously hinted at a potential move to MLS. Back in 2022, while playing for PSG and considering his options between Al Hilal, a return to Brazil, or heading north, he said on the podcastPhenomenos, “I’m not sure if I’ll play in Brazil again.Honestly, I’d love to play in the U.S., even if just for a season.”

Howe hopes high-pressing Newcastle inspired by Chelsea win

Eddie Howe hopes Newcastle United "feel a bit better about themselves" after booking their place in the EFL Cup quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory over Chelsea. The Magpies claimed only their second victory in seven matches across all competitions, with Alexander Isak and an Axel Disasi own goal sending them through to the last eight. Howe's side were beaten 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Sunday, and the head coach was pleased with his players' response against the same opposition three days on. "[A] really good performance tonight, especially in the first half," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. "We got our pressing attitude bang on and got a lot of regains high up the pitch, which is where the first goal came from. [I am] delighted with the contribution from the whole squad. "You always learn from every game and try to put things into practice in the next match. I just felt there was a better feel in our out of possession delivery tonight. We were much better on the details and turning the regains into chances going forwards. "[In the] second half, it wasn't an easy game to manage. They were bringing on some good players from the bench to add to the quality they already had on the pitch, but I thought we defended really well. "This place is an amazing venue to play in and that was shown again tonight. Sold out, great atmosphere, good performance and I hope everyone feels a bit better about themselves now." Meanwhile, Chelsea suffered only their second defeat in 11 games across all competitions, but Enzo Maresca was impressed by what he saw from the visitors, who had an xG of 1.97 over the 90 minutes at St James' Park. "I think it worked if we analysed the performance. If we analysed the result, it didn't work," he told reporters during his post-match press conference. "For 20 minutes until their goal, we were in control of the game. In the last 10 minutes of the first half, we had two clear-cut chances but didn't score. In the second half, we were in control of the game. "We lost the goals because of 10 minutes. For the rest, we were quite good. We did very well tonight, but there are many things we can do better." Brentford await Newcastle in the next round after the Magpies made the quarter-finals for a fourth time in the last five seasons.

RUBEN AMORIM is heading to Old Trafford - and now Manchester United should sign Viktor Gyokeres. On the night Amorim started his three-game farewell tour at Sporting, former Coventry striker Gyokeres maintained his stunning record at the club with a hat-trick in the first 42 minutes before grabbing the fourth in the second half. The red-hot forward, a £20million bargain from the Championship, has now scored 20 goals in 16 games this season on top of his 43 strikes in 50 matches last term. How United, the third lowest scorers in the Premier League, would love someone like the Swedish international. Gyokeres’ opener was well placed from an acute angle while the next two - the third being a penalty - were just raw power. His fourth in the 70th minute was a brilliant individual effort oozing with self confidence. That was before Maximiliano Araujo made it five for the hosts minutes before full-time. Yet United fans will hope their team do not defend under Amorim like the moment Sporting allowed Rodrigo Pinho to pull one back for 2-1 with an easy header. As you would expect, the announcement of Amorim’s departure has been mixed here. Outside the stadium, there was a banner which read: “Amorim, this is not your home anymore, thank you.” Other fans, though, took flags into the ground declaring their love for the coach who led the club to two titles. When Amorim’s name was first read out 30 minutes before kick-off, there were whistles and jeers followed by applause. But when the 39-year-old came out of the tunnel for the game, he received a standing ovation and applauded the fans. Gyokeres said about Amorim and reports suggesting he could follow him to Manchester: "We're sad to see him go. He did an extraordinary job here. We all wish him the best. "Follow him to Manchester? I don't know, I'm here and I like it here. I don't think about it." Speaking after the game, Amorim ruled out a move for Gyokeres, or any Sporting player in January. And the incoming Red Devils chief even put his own very lofty price-tag on the Swedish striker. Amorim said: "Gyokeres costs 100 million (£84m) and it's very difficult. "I'm not going to get any players from Sporting in January." Another player who enjoyed a good reception from the home supporters was former United winger Nani. He started his career at Sporting and the 37-year-old came on as a second half sub for Estrela.

Two days later, Van Nistelrooy got off to a winning start by overseeing a 5-2 win over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup. On Friday, United confirmed that they had found Ten Hag's long-term replacement and that Ruben Amorim would be joining from Sporting Lisbon on November 11. Van Nistelrooy will remain in charge until then and oversee another three home games - against Chelsea, PAOK Salonika and Leicester again. ManUtd.com published an interview with Van Nistelrooy on Saturday morning. It began with the 48-year-old describing his emotions surrounding the win over Leicester. He began: 'Yeah, if I speak about the game, the reception, the connection with the crowd, and how the players reacted and how the players played, it was a great night. 'I enjoyed every second of it. Special, proud moment. Obviously the days before leading up to that were with mixed feelings. 'It was hard to see the manager go: the one who got me into the club, you know, the one who was fighting also for this club and cared a lot about the club. 'So that was hard. But I have to say that, after that, the crowd lifted our spirits and it was a great night in the end.' Van Nistelrooy then praised his players for beating a 'good opponent' on what could have been a 'difficult' night. He added: 'I think the players reacted very well. They took a lot of responsibility, also looking at themselves and [saying]: "We need to improve and we need to do better". 'It's not only the manager's fault, so they acknowledge that, and that's obviously a big step in improving, and they enjoyed themselves on the pitch.' As well as getting a positive reception from the club's fans, Van Nistelrooy revealed that he also received messages of support from former United managers Sir Alex Ferguson and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. 'Yes, I spoke shortly with Sir Alex,' he said. 'He wished me luck before the game. You know, Ole sent me a text to wish me luck, as [did] many former players that reached out and just sent me a text, [wishing] all the best. It was great to receive all these messages.'

Guardiola blames City players being 'HUNGOVER' for FA Cup final defeat by Utd

2025-03-19 03:58:35

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has suggested that his side were 'a little bit hungover' during the FA Cup final against Manchester United.United were surprise winners of the FA Cup last season, one of two trophies that the recently-sacked Erik ten Hag won during his two-and-a-half years in charge of the Red Devils. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has suggested that his side were 'a little bit hungover' during the FA Cup final against Manchester United. United were surprise winners of the FA Cup last season, one of two trophies that the recently-sacked Erik ten Hag won during his two-and-a-half years in charge of the Red Devils. United had raced into a 2-0 lead at Wembley by half-time, with Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo on the scoresheet, perhaps much to the shock of a number of fans watching on. Jeremy Doku hit back a few minutes from time, but it was too little, too late for the Premier League champions, who had to settle for just the one trophy a year on from lifting the Treble. And it was that one trophy that could have cost them the game in May, with Guardiola saying after his side's defeat by Tottenham on Wednesday that his players were 'hungover' for the game. After suffering their first defeat since Wembley, Guardiola said on Wednesday night: 'This is the news, not that we lose, but how long it has been since we lose. Of course, with the FA Cup final we were a little bit hungover, but it is good news.'The final was a week after the final day of the Premier League, which saw City lift their fourth title in a row - a competition record. Jack Grealish, who started on the bench at Wembley, and Erling Haaland led the revelry as City's stars celebrated until 5am at Greek restaurant Fenix, as players took along their wives and girlfriends for a boozy night. Grealish and Haaland struck a pose early in the night as they showed off their watches, with a Premier League medal dripping from the striker's neck. The party started in the dressing room, where players danced and sung: 'Campeones, campeones, ole, ole, ole!' And it seems Guardiola has now acknowledged that the title celebrations perhaps went a little too far, maybe even as far as costing them another trophy. At the time, Guardiola said of the result: 'It's my mistake - the game plan was not good.' 'The players know it, the reason why. Tactically, it was not good. I had the feeling it was not good today. You plan a game for different positions, but didn't work - it's as simple as that. 'The crosses came to nothing when we came to the byline; they had one shot where we gave the goal away, and then the goal for Mainoo - no more than that. 'As always when we play against United, we more or less had control and normally we score from what we created in the second half, but we were not able to do it.' City now face a fight in their bid to stay on track in their remaining competitions this season, with a number of injuries costing the defending Premier League champions. Savinho is the latest man on the treatment table after being stretchered off against Tottenham, while Manuel Akanji hs also picked up an issue and Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish and Kyle Walker are out until after the international break. 'We're in trouble,' Guardiola said of the situation. 'I've never had this situation in nine years. We don't have alternatives. 'I went to the massage table but it was too busy. Tomorrow we have two keepers and Erling to train. It's been getting more difficult game by game but maybe one day we will be altogether.'

Ruben Amorim is close to being appointed as Manchester United's new manager. After another day of talks between United and Sporting Lisbon, the 39-year-old coach is set to succeed Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford by signing a two-and-a-half-year contract worth £6.5million-a-year with the option of a 12-month extension. However, Amorim will not be able to join United until the start of the international break on November 10, which means caretaker boss Ruud van Nistelrooy will remain in temporary charge for three more games against Chelsea, PAOK Salonika and Leicester – having engineered a 5-2 win over the Foxes in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night. United director Sir Dave Brailsford added to the intrigue before the game when a video of him arriving at Old Trafford and appearing to confirm Amorim's appointment was circulated on social media. United are expected to pay £9.2million for the Portuguese. Amorim will become United's sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, and is expected to bring his own back-room team which includes assistants Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido and Emanuel Ferro as well as goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital and sports scientist Paulo Barreira. Van Nistelrooy's role in the new set-up remains unclear, but the Dutchman insisted after the game that he wants to stay on after returning to Old Trafford as Ten Hag's No 2 in the summer. 'I came here as an assistant to help the club. Now in this role, I'm helping as long as needed,' said Van Nistelrooy. 'In the future in any capacity, I'm here to help the club further to build towards the future that's what I'm here for. 'I'm here to help and serve and give my everything for the club in any capacity with so many people here around me that want the best for the club and that will never change.' Van Nistelrooy did not hold a post-match press conference and will instead address the media on Thursday in his first media briefing since stepping up to replace Ten Hag.

The legendary former manager was in attendance at Old Trafford for a thrill-a-minute first half clash with Leicester City in the Carabao Cup fourth round, with six goals on offer in 45 minutes. It was also the first game since the departure of Erik ten Hag on Monday, following the club's worst start to a Premier League campaign in their history. Ferguson will step down from his lucrative role at the end of the season after new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe decided to rip up his contract as part of a cost-cutting programme. Mail Sport reported this month that Ferguson and other members of the club's Football Board have also been told to stay away from the dressing room in a break with tradition. https://img.allfootballapp.com/www/M00/59/C1/720x-/-/-/CgAGVWcioSuAKA9iAACfoNiRMYA514.jpg Ferguson had a great view of his former side scoring four in a stunning first half of football. Casemiro opened the scoring in sensational fashion, with a curling effort straight into the top corner from 25 yards. Alejandro Garnacho then doubled the lead, before Leicester hit their first through Bilal El Khannouss on 33 minutes. Three minutes later though Bruno Fernandes opened his account for the season to restore his side's two-goal advantage, but there were still somehow two more strikes to come. Casemiro grabbed his second of the game on 39 minutes, before Conor Coady ensured the Foxes were still within touching distance on the stroke of half-time to make it 4-2.

There has been plenty of reaction to the Ballon d’Or result from Monday, which saw Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri Hernandez edge out Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior for the 2024 award. There has been plenty of reaction to the Ballon d’Or result from Monday, which saw Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri Hernandez edge out Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior for the 2024 award. The latest person within football to have their say on the matter is Barcelona defender Inigo Martinez, who has been an international teammate of Rodri’s in recent years. Speaking to Sport, Martinez took a diplomatic approach, although he admitted that he was very happy to see Rodri crowned as the winner. “In the end, everyone has their own way of thinking. There are 100 journalists who vote and if they voted for Rodri because they believe that he deserved it more than Vinicius. I’m happy for Rodri, I know him and the truth is that seeing him there with a Ballon d’Or made me happy. I hope to continue seeing him for many years up there too.” Martinez also spoke on another winner from the Ballon d’Or ceremony: Lamine Yamal. The 17-year-old Barcelona sensation took home the Kopa Trophy on Monday. “Lamine is a differential player, a player who is rarely seen and having him with us is a joy. Many balls pass through him, he generates a lot of nervousness in the opponent and you can see it. He also doesn’t tremble, he has “la pausa”, he generates chances, he scores important goals… For us he is a fundamental player, he still has a long way to go and we hope that he continues to improve and see him lift a Ballon d’Or one day.”

Inside Gerrard's stunning mansion as Liverpool legend battles to save Saudi job

2025-03-17 09:26:07

Steven Gerrard issued a defiant message this week that he wants to carry on as manager of Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, despite calls for his resignation.Gerrard is 16 months into his £15.2m-a-year contract at Al-Ettifaq, and led the club to sixth place in the Saudi Pro League last season. Steven Gerrard issued a defiant message this week that he wants to carry on as manager of Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, despite calls for his resignation. Gerrard is 16 months into his £15.2m-a-year contract at Al-Ettifaq, and led the club to sixth place in the Saudi Pro League last season. But they are down in 10th place this term having failed to register a league win since September 14, and slumped to a new low on Wednesday when they were beaten 3-1 by lower league outfit Al-Jabalain to exit the King Cup at the last-16 stage. At a press conference on Friday, Gerrard hit back at claims he scheduled training sessions around Liverpool matches and vowed to continue working to deliver success at the Saudi Pro League club. 'My main importance is this job and trying to make this club in the best possible way on and off the field,' Gerrard said. ‘I am all in and I will continue to be all in.’ Gerrard's family have also been all-in to supporting his efforts at the club having moved to the Middle East after he accepted the £15.2m-a-year role. The family had turned down a house near his job in Dammam - where Al-Ettifaq are based - and opted to settle down in Bahrain. Bahrain's capital is located just an hours’ drive from Dammam, enabling the former Liverpool star to easily commute to work. The country has more relaxed laws than Saudi Arabia, where alcohol is banned, and several WAGS have complained of cultural restrictions being placed on them and facing abuse over how they are dressed. Some claimed that they have even been refused entry to shops and malls for showing off part of their arms, legs or chest. Gerrard's wife Alex Curran, however, is said to be living a 'dream life' in their £10k- a-month mansion in Hamala, Bahrain. The family live in a luxury six-bedroom villa in the Hamala area of the city close to members of Bahrain’s royal family and others from the country’s elite. It costs around £10,000 per month and comes with its own swimming pool, tennis court and games room and is in a compound behind a high gate. The family have been able to enjoy Bahrain’s lavish malls, restaurants and bars which have earned it the reputation of being the party capital of the Gulf region. As part of his contract, Gerrard and his family have also been given free membership of the country’s two most exclusive health clubs which are based at the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel and the Ritz Carlton Hotel. The couple, who married in 2007, share three girls and a boy; Lilly Ella, 20; Lexie, 17; Lourdes, 12 and Lio, 7. They are enrolled at Bahrain’s most exclusive English language school, which is in the world’s top 100 and where fees are almost £11,000 per year each. The Gerrards are regular visitors to the Ritz’s open-air bar, located close to its private beach, where Premier League games are shown on giant screens. They have also been seen at Bahrain Rugby Club, an exclusive expat hangout which is made up of pristine sports pitches. The club has a large sports bar where the former Liverpool legend has reportedly enjoyed a pint and chats with the locals. For Alex, one of her favourite destinations is Manama’s World Trade Centre which houses over 80 luxury fashion labels - including Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Versace. Another location in the country where she has been spotted strolling in the sunshine is the Avenues, a stylish waterfront shopping centre with over 130 leading brands and more than 60 restaurants and cafes. Gerrard, however, is facing a fight to remain in his lucrative Saudi Pro League job. Supporters have turned on the Liverpool legend, while several Saudi pundits have suggested Gerrard should resign from his position. Reports had emerged that Gerrard could leave the club following a meeting with Hatim Al Misehal, Al-Ettifaq's head of football. Gerrard confirmed he had meet with the official on Thursday as part of a typical meeting, while he vowed to fight on despite increasing pressure around the team's results. 'On the back of recent results in my position you are always aware of disappointment from fans, I have to take that responsibility on my shoulders,' Gerrard said on Friday. ‘That is what I will do and continue to fight and work to improve the recent results. 'I don’t react, change or get overconcerned about social media or anyone on the outside of Ettifaq’s opinion, my priority is this club. ‘I listen to the people within and continue to support my players. 'I meet Mr Hatim after every game and we talk football, where it is a win, loss or draw, we have fantastic support, myself, the staff and the players from the management team. 'We did meet yesterday but we meet after every single game. He added: 'I want to make it abundantly clear my priority is Ettifaq, I have a contract with Ettifaq and I am in a real privileged position. ‘I respect all my previous clubs, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Rangers and LA Galaxy, but my main importance is this job and trying to make this club in the best possible way on and off the field. ‘I am all in and I will continue to be all in.’

Van Nistelrooy gives Man United fans a five-star reminder of the good times

2025-03-25 04:27:07

It took only a gesture - Ruud van Nistelrooy’s first gesture – to remind Old Trafford of the place it has been and will be once more. When he marched out into the arena last night and immediately turned back to flash a fist at the Stretford End, it transported us back to the days when fight and style and indomitability walked this stadium. It was not the kind of gesture you would ever have seen from Erik ten Hag and it set the tone for a night which provided a real sense that a decent run in the job for Van Nistelrooy really might not have been the worst idea in the world. He punched the air and wore a smile as wide as the Irwell, when Casemiro despatched a world class opening goal, by which time his enthusiasm to direct his own players had taken him all the way out of his technical area and half way across Steve Cooper’s. He was ushered back. The stadium lapped it all up and Sir Alex Ferguson, back in his seat, smiled beneficently, and it was hard not to think, ‘What if?’ What if those running United could have waited, observed and tried to discover if this man had the answers they’re looking for. Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes – dummying exquisitely to allow the ball to run on for the Casemiro bullet – played like were actually enjoying themselves. A reminder of how sheer pleasure and motivation to do well for a manager counts for just as much as philosophies and formations. And though there were substantial caveats – a Leicester side featuring nine changes still managed to core twice before half time and Joshua Zirkee was still lamentable – it was certainly a throwback. There were no histrionics from Van Nistelrooy, who did not budge from the touchline throughout - arms folded, mostly; occasional pointing and exhortations; an arm thrown around Rene Hake when they plotted. He’s certainly not one to parade himself as a United legend like he is entitled to. He’s quietly got on with the prosaic realities of the coaching role which Manchester United have assigned him after sounding him out last June. The 7am departures for Carrington from his Deansgate apartment in central Manchester. The solitary evenings there. ‘It’s more than a job. Otherwise, you wouldn't opt to live alone in a flat,’ he told Dutch paper Algemeen Dagblad’s Maarten Wijffels, just before Ten Hag was sacked. ‘As a family you have to have a discussion about being apart. That is the price. And one you wouldn't pay for any club. But you would for this one.’ He also kept things low key when United’s emphatic win was sealed, on Tuesday night. A few TV press interviews but he elected not to hold court from the press conference seat where Ferguson sat for all those years. No words were needed to reveal how much he wanted this moment and any more that might come his way here. Old Trafford loved him for that.

Ruben Amorim: Sporting believe 39-year-old's move to Man Utd is a done deal

2025-03-05 19:28:34

Sporting believe Ruben Amorim’s move to Manchester United is a done deal, but are standing firm on his 30-day notice period.Amorim, who has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, has told Sporting he wants to move to United. Sporting believe Ruben Amorim’s move to Manchester United is a done deal, but are standing firm on his 30-day notice period. Amorim, who has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, has told Sporting he wants to move to United. Key figures from Manchester United are in Portugal as negotiations continue with Lisbon over their pursuit of Erik ten Hag's successor.Sky Sports Newsunderstands the focus of the talks remains on the backroom staff Amorim may want to bring with him to Old Trafford. Sporting are defending their interests by making sure Amorim, who has a 30-day notice period in his contract, leaves in the right way after United told them they wanted to pay his £8.3m release clause. Sporting are asking United to pay £4.15m to let Amorim leave immediately and as compensation for the three coaches Amorim wants to take with him to United. The coaches are Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido and goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital. Sporting fans were disappointed to discover that Amorim had a relatively low release clause in his contract for so-called 'big clubs'. The fee is believed to be easily affordable for the richest clubs and Sporting want to make sure they do not just roll over for United - that is why they are holding out for an extra £4.15m. Sporting will not make life easy for Amorim and they were expecting him to stay until the end of the season. They believe he has agreed personal terms with United and is set to treble his current salary of £2m net a year (about £4.15m gross). Manchester United have already confirmed Ruud van Nistelrooy will undertake pre-match media duties on Thursday ahead of their clash with Chelsea this weekend. Could 30-day notice period halt appointment? Sky Sports News chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol: "Sporting aren't going to let Amorim leave without them being respected and without their interests being taken into consideration. There's a €10m release clause. United said they'll pay that. But he also has a 30-day notice period in his contract. "Sporting would want ideally for him to stay for those 30 days. And also, he wants to take three of the coaches from Sporting to Manchester with him. For that, Sporting need to be paid compensation. "And the compensation they are looking for is €5m, which is around £4m. So from Sporting's point of view, Amorim is going, but they are saying, 'hey, respect us too. We're a big, big club in Europe. We're a big, big club in Portugal. We're not going to just turn around and let Manchester United come into town, take our manager, put him on a private plane and take him to Old Trafford.' "He has a contract. Yes, the release clause has been triggered. But there's still this issue of the 30-day notice period. They may be prepared to let him go during the international break that's going to happen next month. Now, if that were the case, that would mean that Amorim would be in charge of Sporting for their Friday night game against Estrela. "That would also mean that Amorim would be in charge of the Champions League game against Manchester City next week. And also the game against Braga a week on Sunday. Then you have the international break. "So potentially that would be the moment for him to make his move. Now obviously United want him straightaway. But Sporting are saying, 'look at his contract, he has this 30-day notice period'." Amorim breaks silence on future Speaking to the media on Tuesday evening, Amorim insisted "nothing has yet been decided" on his future. I have nothing new to say at this moment." He was quoted as telling broadcast media: "Nothing is decided yet. Asked bySky Sports News' reporter Cotterill if he would be in the dugout at Old Trafford for the game, Amorim said: "I will be here..." Asked if that was for sure, Amorim added: "[Laughing] I don't know!" Before leaving, Amorim added: "I will explain everything. It will be very clear." Amorim the new 'Special One' A former Benfica and Portugal midfielder, Amorim retired as a player in 2017 and just two years later he took up his first managerial job at Braga. He then joined Sporting in March 2020 where he has established himself as one of Europe's most sought-after young coaches, twice guiding the club to the league title. He has also won the Taca da Liga - the Portuguese League Cup - on three occasions, twice with Sporting and once with Braga. Senior figures at Sporting believe Amorim is the new 'Special One' - the best Portuguese manager since Jose Mourinho - and they are convinced he will be a success at United. United players have been warned to expect an extremely strict head coach who will make them follow the rules. There are no egos in Amorim's dressing room and "he will not take any s*** from anyone". He has a strict work ethic, is totally demanding in training and will get rid of anyone who steps out of line. The atmosphere last night for what could be Amorim's last Sporting game was described as "like a funeral" and the club are aware that Benfica and Porto fans are celebrating his imminent departure. Reserve team manager Joao Pereira will be Sporting's new head coach. Why Sporting coach Amorim could be right for Man Utd Sky Sports' Adam Bate: It has long been inevitable that Ruben Amorim would take one of Europe's biggest jobs.

Man Utd decision was 'now or never' for Amorim

2025-03-21 17:08:56

Ruben Amorim says the decision to move to Manchester United during the season was made for him, after he was told it was "now or never".The 39-year-old Sporting Lisbon coach is set to make the move to Manchester on November 11, despite wanting to wait until the end of the season to make the switch. Ruben Amorim says the decision to move to Manchester United during the season was made for him, after he was told it was "now or never". The 39-year-old Sporting Lisbon coach is set to make the move to Manchester on November 11, despite wanting to wait until the end of the season to make the switch. The move was announced on Friday, with Amorim agreeing on a contract that will keep him at the club until 2027. He becomes the sixth permanent manager at United since Alex Ferguson's departure 11 years ago. Sporting have made a flying start to the season with 10 wins from 10 putting them top of the Primeira Liga table, but Amorim was keen to attest he would have preferred to continue his victorious streak. "The season started, we started very well, and then Manchester United came, they pay above the compensation clause and the president defends the club's interests," he explained. "I never discussed anything with the president. For three days, I said I wanted to stay until the end of the season, but then I was told it was not possible. "It was now or never, or Manchester would go for another option. So, I had three days to make my mind up, to make a decision that radically changes my life." Amorim brought substantial success to the Portuguese capital, winning two league titles in the space of four seasons after the club had failed to do so in the 19 years prior. Despite being one of the most promising coaches in the game, the Lisbon-born manager asserted that only a call from Manchester would persuade him to leave his home club. "I've had other opportunities - the president and [director of football] Hugo Viana can confirm this," he added. "It's not the first or the second time that I have been requested by another team, and I don't want another team. "After Sporting I wanted that one, Manchester, and I want that context because that context allows me to do things my way, and the club believes me that way. "There's a time when I have to take a step forward in my career. That's what happened. It was harder for me than any Sporting fan, believe me, but I had to do this."

SIR ALEX FERGUSON was spotted in the stands for Manchester United's 5-2 Carabao Cup win over Leicester on Wednesday night. The legendary Red Devils manager, 82, was recently relieved of his £2million-a-year ambassadorial role at the club. But he remains welcome at matches and was on hand to watch the first game since Erik ten Hag was sacked. Fergie will have been proud to see one of his former players, Ruud van Nistelrooy, taking charge of the team on an interim basis. But it was not the Scot's presence at the match that surprised fans. Instead, it was the company he was keeping as he chatted to an England cricketing legend. Michael Vaughan was pictured talking to Fergie during Man Utd's comfortable victory. The skipper for England's iconic 2005 Ashes triumph was a name many would not have expected to see with Ferguson. And people reacted in their droves on social media. One fan said: "Why is Michael Vaughan sitting next to SAF ????????." Another added: "Is that Michael Vaughan I see at Old Trafford. ????" A third replied: "Poor Sir Alex having to watch the game with Michael Vaughan in his ear." While a fourth responded: "What is Michael Vaughan doing next to Sir Alex?"

Manchester City remained top of Premier League 2 - an Under-21 development league for academies - on Friday night by earning a crushing 5-0 win over Norwich. The home side had been 1-0 up at half-time through Emilio Lawrence's strike, but blew their opponents away in the second half. The crushing scoreline had much to do with a former Premier League striker's son, who was introduced at half-time for goalscorer Lawrence. Within 20 minutes, the forward had netted a hat-trick to put Man City 4-0 up. He then provided the assist to round off the victory to keep Man City top of the standings. It capped a remarkable week for Reigan Heskey, one of the son's of former Premier League and England striker Emile. Reigan had earlier in the week scored a stunning curling effort in the EFL, before he and his brother Jaden helped Man City win the penalty shoot-out. His impact was more devastating on Friday night, scoring his first goal within two minutes of his arrival by showing his poacher's instincts to tap home from a cross from close range. The goal marked the 16-year-old's first at Premier League 2 level, as he continues to step up from the Under-18s, where he has six goals and assisted four in seven matches. His second followed soon after with the composed finish in the 53rd minute, slotting calmly into the far corner. The hat-trick was completed when Reigan's curling right footed effort could only be helped into the net by Norwich's goalkeeper. A fine evening's work was capped off by assisting a goal for Will Dickson in the last minute, as Man City wrapped up a seventh straight win in the competition. Regian offered an understatement post-match, when he told a Man City's club interview that it was a 'good performance'. https://img.allfootballapp.com/www/M00/5A/0B/720x-/-/-/CgAGVWcmXiKAFyrIAADUArF_K6I649.jpg 'I came on and made an impact which is what I try to do every time so it was a good performance,' he said. 'Every team wants to be top [of the table], you want to win every game week in, week out. 'The pressure of having them [other teams] behind us gives us motivation to play well every week.' His brother Jaden had also played the full match in midfield on Friday night. Reigan will be looking to follow in the footsteps of his father Emile, who is a Premier League legend, having scored 110 goals in 516 matches for teams such as Leicester City, Liverpool and Aston Villa. Heskey also overcame setback after setback to keep his place in the national team and eventually finished his career with 62 caps. Having lost his spot after a disappointing Euro 2004 campaign, the forward impressed for his club sides to claw his way back into the England setup, making a shock return for Fabio Capello's team in the 2010 World Cup. During his spell at Newcastle Jets in Australia in 2012, Emile's sons Jaden and Reigan, aged four and six at the time, could be seen stealing the show on the pitch after matches, kitted out in special 'Heskey' shirts. Their father is now the head of football development for Leicester City Women, having previously had a spell as interim coach of the team. Earlier this year Heskey was ordered to pay a bill for legal fees of almost £200,000 after a lengthy dispute with HMRC regarding an unpaid tax bill which dated back to 2019. Reigan will be hoping his stunning form continues in midweek when Man City face Sporting Lisbon in the UEFA Youth League.

“That shocked me” – Barcelona star reveals surprising support from teammate

Before Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s season-ending knee injury, Barcelona’s goalkeeping situation was straightforward: the German international was undisputed number one, with Inaki Pena being backup. Things have been less known in recent weeks, although a clear picture is forming again. Pena has been the starter since Ter Stegen went down against Villarreal in September – and that’s despite the arrival of experienced campaigner Wojciech Szczesny. Hansi Flick is likely to keep things as they are for the time being at least, especially after Pena’s strong performance in El Clasico. Speaking to MD, Pena opened up on his dynamic with Szczesny, which he admitted to being better than he expected in the circumstances. “As a person he is spectacular, as you can already see from the outside. I knew him only as a goalkeeper and for how he had played in some of the best teams in Europe. The first day he started talking to me and told me that he was not coming to compete with me, that the only competition I have is with myself – that shocked me. In a position like goalkeeper, which is so competitive because only one player plays, he showed great respect that perhaps he did not need to show. He is 34 years old and helps a lot.” There are still many, many matches to come this season, so the Barcelona ‘keeper situation could change significantly over the next few months. For now, Pena has the confidence of Hansi Flick.
